Tonight, we are going on a guided meditation; that is, we are taking a spiritual trip a journey if you will, with our Ancestors i.e. Egungun, our family members who have departed from this world.
To give you some historical facts about Egungun, normally referred to as Ancestors. In Ifa-Orisa Tradition the Word Egungun, mean bone. So, tonight we are addressing and sharing with them. Why? Because our departed family members’ body mass had bone structure as well as flesh, blood etc. Upon their departure the flesh literally disappears in time and what’s left is the Skeleton or bone structure. So, Egungun or Ancestor denotes that the individual has crossed over and gone to the next world. However, it is evident in some cultures, the definition of Egungun i.e. ancestors vary. In some schools of thought; one can only become or be elevated to Egungun if that person has lived an exemplary life. So it is in Ifa-Orisa Tradition. An exemplary life style sets the stage for one to become deified making that person worth of our praise.
