H.E. Barrett, Jr.

On Wednesday, April 9,2008 the topic will be : Black Political Mindset. (This is a show that I had to postpone this past Sunday). I've been advocating for years that black Americans need to have a Black Political Party MINDSET if not an actual party. We need to vote in EVERY election and ONLY for the candidate who addresses our unique circumstances -- even an independent, win or lose. Then BOTH parties will see that we WILL VOTE, but not for them. They will THEN COURT our vote because most politicians ONLY concern themselves with the VOTING PUBLIC. Granted, Obama, Jackson, and Sharpton have all sought to increase voter participation. But that is beacuse they know that any successful campaign by a Black man seeking the presidency is going to need a large constituency of Blacks voting en masse -- and that we historically aren't even REGISTERD, much less regular voters. But with most others, NON-VOTERS DON'T COUNT!! By voting, but not for them, we assure them that we WILL VOTE. We then can gain political clout because both parties will acknowledge that -- though we have not the numbers to ELECT a president -- we provide a very strong SWING VOTE! This will stop the Democratic Party from taking us for granted and chide the Republican Party into courting our vote as well. Lets say for instance, Obama is upstaged by superdelegates. That would be devastating for his supporters and doubly so for his Black supporters. But that would also provide an opportunity to vote for Cynthia McKinney in the Green Party. No, she wouldn't win, but millions of Black folk voting for her would tell EVERY politician that Black people will vote in large numbers, but that THEY won't get the vote without REAL inclusion in the politics of the party. We would then have REAL choices in EVERY election thereafter -- as long as we stick to our guns! This is actually where I THOUGHT Tavis Smiley's "Black Agenda" was taking us. What say you?
