The Loggers of the North West were crawling out from under the wreckage of the nineties. It had started in London with the failure of the great banking house of Baring Brothers. It had crept its paralyzing way westward, wrecking banks and industrial enterprises, until it struck our top heavy financial structure on Pungent Sound. It knocked us flat, but we were young and innocent, and we didn’t know we were knocked out. A busted banker in Tacoma ventured an aphorism: It pays to keep a’ wigglin’. We pasted it in our hats. And the Bryan, with his Crown of Thorns and Cross of Gold campaign, was defeated; McKinley, champion of the gold-bugs, was elected. We lifted our hearts in new confidence and tore into the timber.
