The institution of marriage is declining because the memories of hurt, betrayal, disappointment, dishonesty, even cruelty make men and women shy away from a lifetime commitment with the opposite sex.  Marriage is an economic foundation, and the decline of marriage is a major contributor to the declining economic condition of too many communities in which single mothers with children are struggling and many unmarried men are living a paycheck away from homelessness.
