    Date / Time:

Michael Hinman stepping down from SyFy Radio in '09

Michael Hinman will leave the online airwaves of SyFy Radio at the end of January as longtime SyFy Portal news editor Wayne Hall prepares to take over as host.

"So why am I doing it? It's not that I don't love doing SyFy Radio. I do," Hinman said during the Nov. 12 broadcast of SyFy Radio. "I don't walk away lightly. But by the time I hand the reins over to Wayne, it will be almost a year since we started doing SyFy Radio, and that's a long time. I know it sounds like I just come on here and make stuff up as I go, but it really does take a lot of work."

The announcement was made just hours after Hinman and Hall finalized plans to hand over SyFy Radio, which will not only move to Sundays beginning in February, but also become a monthly show.

Hall will be the primary host of the show, joined by sidekick Nick Chase, who also is SyFy Portal's lead programmer.

"I'm looking forward to how it's going to evolve and turn into something," Hall said during the recent show. "We'll try some new things, and [we'll] keep the good old thing as well."

The actual day of the month has not been finalized yet, but Hinman plans on continuing weekly shows of SyFy Radio through the end of January, including two holiday specials just before Thanksgiving and Christmas. Upcoming guests on what Hinman called his "farewell" tour include "Battlestar Galactica" and "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" composer Bear McCreary, and "Babylon 5" creator J. Michael Straczynski (of course, scheduled guests are subject to change).

Hinman is not leaving SyFy Portal, the site he founded in 1998, and he told Hall that he would stop by and visit the show from time to time, but he's looking forward to seeing how the show progresses, and is hoping it will morph back into a weekly show as it is now.

"I don't want the show to end. In fact, I want it to get better," Hinman said. "And I think Wayne is the man to make that happen."

SyFy Radio began on BlogTalkRadio last March, and has aired as a weekly show ever since with occasional on-location specials from places like the Vulkon convention in Orlando, and Comic-Con International in San Diego.

Guests have included everyone from Webmasters of popular sites to actors like Jane Badler of "V" fame, and the recently married Star Trek legend George Takei.

By moving the show to a monthly format, SyFy Radio will be able to concentrate on fewer, better guests, Hinman said, while allowing the show time to evolve.

Hinman declined to say what his new project would be, but did say he would be sticking with BlogTalkRadio. It's likely his next radio project will be related to a third site being launched by SyFy Portal's corporate parent, The SyUniverse Group Inc.
