 ABOUT THIS WEEK’S EPISODE:

How we use land is the most important aspect of societal development and civilization. Land use involves the efficiency and sophistication of developing and managing the environment for sustainable human activities.  Land use and urban sprawl are major environmental concerns affecting us in a variety of ways. We must adopt sustainable patterns of development which are not self-destructive.

In this episode of Land use, we will be discussing Urban sprawl, Habitat fragmentation, and Habitat destruction.

In Africa, urban sprawl comprises two main, contrasting types of development in the same city: one is characterized by large peri-urban areas with informal and illegal patterns of land use.

The other is a form of “suburban sprawl” in which residential zones for high- and middle-income groups and highly valued commercial and retail complexes are well-connected by individual rather than public transport.
