"Most blacks did not know what Obama promised and didn't care," says Mary Frances Berry, a professor of American Social Thought and professor of history at the University of Pennsylvania. "Symbolically, it was very important for people to see him there (in the Oval Office) and for us to see him there." She noted that on Sundays, people in black churches prayed for Obama and his family and even wrote letters to him. But they did not ask anything of him -- just wished him well. "You don't ask him to do anything," said Berry, who for years was chair of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. "That might upset people. "The danger is when he's no longer president." Blacks who might make demands of the next president will be confronted with that person saying you didn't ask Obama for anything. Let's talk about why black folks are happy with the Barack Obama Presidency, tonight on AAPP's Political Slugfest, "if you can handle the truth."
