In Mat Stein's words, "I have been pushing the envelope since I was a small child and nearly drowned when I was 5 or six years old. Water in the lungs, could not swim, in water over well my head, loosing strength , lunging off lake bottom reaching for the dock and falling far short, was giving up when voice in my head said "give it one more try". On last shot, I literally sailed out of the water, grabbed the dock and pulled my self to safety and life. I should have been dead a dozen times in my life, but each time it was as if a guardian angel pushed, shoved, or nudged me in the right direction to save my life: 2) At age 11 slipped and fell in front of a car on an icy road. Skidded to a stop with the car's wheel resting against my head. 3) Age 16 in severe car wreck squeezed between two snow plows on the freeway..."
