When I was 8, my teacher drew a line on the chalkboard and wrote "Disco" on one side and "Rock" on the other. She was trying to decide on a theme for the next school dance. So each student had to stand on the side of the theme they wanted.
Don't remember what the outcome was but I definitely remember which side I chose! (and now Joan Jett's "I Love Rock N Roll" is playing in the background.)
So that's when my love affair with Rock started.
After I left Canada and moved to the States, I started listening to Alanis Morisette, the Cranberries, Extreme, etc. And there was something special about the way I felt when I listened to them. Alive, maybe? Anyway, it was perhaps a little strange because at the same time, I played piano by ear, liked classical music, and liked to listen to Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston.
One thing I definitely abhor is being put in a box. I don't think anyone likes that. So even though some would say that my style of music is reminiscent of Alanis Morissette, the Cranberries, or maybe even Evanescence.
