WordSmitten Guidelines. For an author to be a guest on the show, these are our guidelines. (Note: We select editors and publishing executives by invitation only.) 1. We look for guests who have depth, humor, and insight into the craft of writing. 2. If you are a debut author, please send a query letter to our office and include either a synopsis or A.R.E. (advance edition) of your book. 3. If you are self-published, our policy, currently, is to not review non-trade publications. That policy may change in 2009, so check back with us. 4. We receive too many requests to personally respond to each request. If your query letter is brief, polite, and witty, we tend to respond if we are interested in bringing you in as a guest. 5. We produce and broadcast interviews from our studios located in St. Petersburg, Florida. We do broadcast live from our BTR home when our guests are based in New York. Thank you for your interest in being a guest on the WordSmitten about the books broadcast. We appreciate your support of these programs. Kate Sullivan interviews Francine Prose, the author of fifteen books of fiction, including "Blue Angel" -- a finalist for the National Book Award. Her newest book, "Anne Frank: the Book, the Life, the Afterlife," launches this week. Her novel, Goldengrove, was published in September 2008. She is the president of PEN American Center. She lives in New York City. ========================= In "Anne Frank: The Book, the Life, the Afterlife," Francine Prose, who is author of "Reading Like a Writer," explores the artistry, ambition, and enduring influence of Anne Frank’s classic, "The Diary of a Young Girl." Approved by both the Anne Frank House Foundation in Amsterdam and the Anne Frank-Fonds in Basel, run by the Frank family, this work of literary criticism unravels the complex, fascinating story of the diary and effectively makes the case for it being a work of art from a precociously gifted writer. ====================== Francine Prose,Anne Frank,PEN,award-winning author,Blue Angel,Anne Frank's Diary WordSmitten. www.wordsmitten.com www.twitter.com/wordsmitten

WordSmitten :: Actor Tony Curtis :: "American Prince"

Tony Curtis appears live on the WordSmitten "About the Books" program on March 1 at 4 PM.

Tony Curtis is an American film actor famous for handsome good looks and trademark New York accent. He discusses his book, "American Prince."

    Biography

Tony Curtis, whose birth name was Bernard Schwartz, is the eldest of three sons born to Manuel and Helen Schwartz. Tony was born on June 3, 1925, in New York City. Tony grew up in an impoverished section of the Bronx and and his family struggled through the Depression. Eventually, Tony joined the Navy in 1943, and upon his release from active duty, he returned to New York where he used the GI Bill to attend acting school.

Tony first gained attention in a Greenwich Village stage production of "Golden Boy." Not long after his discovery, he was offered a seven year contract by Universal Pictures. In 1948 he headed for California where his screen debut had him dancing with Yvonne de Carlo in Criss Cross (1948).

Tony first earned top billing rights in The Prince Who Was a Thief (1951) which co-starred Piper Laurie. Tony returned to the screen as a boxer in Flesh and Fury (1952).

Although under contract with Universal, Paramount cast Tony in the role of Houdini (1953,) which cast him opposite Janet Leigh (his first wife).

In 1958 when Curtis and Sidney Poitier starred in Stanley Kramer's social drama The Defiant Ones (1959), both men earned Academy Award nominations.

Tony's most memorable role was in Some Like It Hot (1959) playing opposite Marylin Monroe and Jack Lemon. Riding on the crest of Some Like It Hot, Tony got to work first hand with his idol Cary Grant in Blake Edward's comedy, Operation Petticoat (1959), another massive hit.

For director Stanley Kubrick, Tony co-starred in the 1960 epic Spartacus, followed a year later by The Great Impostor.

He battled long and hard to win the against-type title role in The Boston Strangler (1968), a role he receives critical acclaim for to this day. Tony returned to comedy again with Those Daring Young Men in Their Jaunty Jalopies (1969).

Starring in over 140 major motion pictures. An American icon, Tony not only appears on the cover of The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club but was the inspiration for, and the voice of, the character "Stony Curtis" in the cartoon The Flintstones.

Tony had many great friends over time, including close relationships with the legendary Rat Pack--Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford.

Tony has been married five times. He first wed actress Janet Leigh in 1951, and the couple had two daughters, Kelly (b.1957) and Jamie Lee (b.1958). After a marriage of 11 years, Tony married actress Christine Kaufmann. They had two daughters, Alexandra (b.1964) and Allegra (b.1966). Tony and Kaufmann divorced in 1967 and a year later he married Leslie Allen in 1968 and they had two sons: Nicholas (b.1971, who died in 1994) and Benjamin (b.1973). Tony and Allen divorced in 1982. He wed lawyer Lisa Deutsch in 1993, and divorced her in 1994, no children. On November 6, 1998, Tony married his fifth wife, Jill VandenBerg.

Tony is still married to Jill today, making their marriage the longest lasting and most succesful relationship Tony has ever enjoyed. Tony attributes his health, well-being, and happiness to Jill.

Tony is now enjoying a successful second career as a fine artist. Since at least the early 1960s, Curtis has had a second career as a painter, assemblage creator, and sketcher. His work can command more than $50,000 a canvas now and it is on this he now focuses rather than movies. "I still make movies but I'm not that interested any more. I paint all the time." Tony's paintings are featured in galleries all around the world, including in Las Vegas, Carmel, Maui, Whistler, London, Paris, and New York. In 2007 his painting The Red Table went on display at the Metropolitan Museum in Manhattan.

In addition, Tony is the biggest supporter of Shiloh Horse Rescue and Sanctuary, a non-profit horse rescue started by he and his wife, Jill. Tony and Jill actively support the rights of horses not to be abused and slaughtered for human consumption. Currently, Tony and Jill have over two hundred rescued horses on their ranch outside Jean, Nevada. For more information visit www.shilohhorserescue.com

WordSmitten :: Enslaved By Ducks :: Author Bob Tarte

Tune in to the fun. In a post-Valentine's Day discussion of this holiday, humorist and memoirist Bob Tarte talks with Kate about unsettling incidents and memories of this supposedly romantic holiday that each of us may take too seriously. Author of Enslaved By Ducks, Bob Tarte had read all the classic animal books (The Parrot Who Owns Me, The Dog who Rescues Cats, Arnie the Darling Starling, That Quail Robert, The Cat Who Came for Christmas) about the joys of animals, the touching moments. But none revealed what it was really like to live with an unruly menagerie. Bob Tarte's witty account reveals the truth of animal ownership: who really owns who, the complicated logistics of accommodating many species under one roof, the intricate routines that evolve, and ultimately, the distinct and insistent personalities of every animal in the house - and on its perimeter. Writing as someone who's been ambushed by the way in which animals - even cranky ones - can wend their way into one’s heart, Bob Tarte is James Herriott by way of Bill Bryson. WordSmitten. Decoding Love :: A Valentine Review on WordSmitten

WordSmitten. Tune in to the fun. Kate Sullivan interviews the author of Decoding Love. Andrew Trees discusses his new book and why it takes twelve frogs to find a prince. A smart, entertaining, and eye-opening look at the science of love. Drawing from the latest studies in economics, brain science, game theory, evolutionary psychology, and other fields, Decoding Love takes on a topic we all think we understand—how we fall in love—and illustrates that most of our assumptions are wrong. Andrew Trees offers surprising new insights into the nature of romance and the modern world of dating. His new book, Decoding Love, reveals the frequently bizarre scientific findings about human attraction from the powerful influence of smell to a mathematical theory that one must date twelve people before happening upon Mr. or Ms. Right.

WHAT'S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT Lyrics

    Artist: Tina Turner
    Album: Live In Europe

    Producer: Terry Britten
Albums: Private Dancer (84), Simply The Best (91),

Grammy Awards: Record of the year, Song of the year, Best pop vocal performance, female (85)
MTV Video Award: Best female video (85)

You must understand though the touch of your hand
    Makes my pulse react
That it's only the thrill of boy meeting girl
    Opposittes attract
    It's physical
    Only logical
You must try to ignore that it means more than that

What's love got to do, got to do with it
What's love but a second hand emotion
What's love got to do, got to do with it
Who needs a heart when a heart can be broken

It may seem to you that I'm acting confused
    When you're close to me
If a tend to look dazed I've read it someplace
    I've got cause to be
    There's a name for it
    There's a phrase that fits
But whatever the reason you do it for me

What's love got to do, got to do with it
What's love but a second hand emotion
What's love got to do, got to do with it
Who needs a heart when a heart can be broken

I've been taking on a new direction
    But I have to say
I've been thinking about my own protection
It scares me to feel this way

What's love got to do, got to do with it
What's love but a sweet old fashioned notion
What's love got to do, got to do with it
Who needs a heart when a heart can be broken
