WSN is proud to bring you Andrei Codrescu! Andrei Codrescu (www.codrescu.com) has been a commentator on All Things Considered since 1983. He is an homme-de-lettres whose novels, essays and poetry have been infiltrating the American psyche since he emigrated from his native Romania to Detroit in 1965. He is the author of forty books of poetry, fiction, and essays, and the founder of Exquisite Corpse. He has received a Peabody award for the PBS version of his film Road Scholar, and has reported for NPR and ABC News from Romania (1989) and Cuba (1996). His new books are The Posthuman Guide: Tzara and Lenin Play Chess (Princeton University Press, 2009) and Jealous Witness: New Poems (Coffee House Press), with a CD of Storm Songs by The New Orleans Klezmer All-Stars. We very pleased to present Abbot Christopher Jamison author of Finding Happiness. Abbot Christopher, host of the TV series “The Monastery,” says: “Disney stories have replaced Bible stories in the Western world. Consumer culture has delivered great material benefits but it is now taking over our spiritual needs as well. ‘Hakuna Matata’ is not another way of singing ‘Amazing Grace.’ Nor is it the way to find happiness.” The Abbot, who will be in the U.S. this month as part of his book tour and we are very happy to have him with us on WSN Radio. 4th of July Historical Poem: Root of Four - Jul 03,2008

Root of four

Hopper full of ink, boiling spilling
    Over cracked lip
Quick dip of molted feather, sharpen tine
    Scribbling lined parchment
Curled, repeating rolling, flattened again
    Sign and sign again and again
In the dark night of knotted made cabin
    Hidden safe and away
From capitol hill, beady blinking eyes
Peer from powdered horse hair crowns
    Lips too stern, feigning frowns
Breaking smiles, as bodies sprawl for miles and miles
    North to south, south to north
Atlantic tides, crimson diver, floating coats circling
    England’s moat
Bearing an America coat of arms tattered and torn
    Wooden crosses adorn Indian rows
Casting aside bloated beaked crows
    With mottled eyes seeing heaven skies
Clouds do dance and sun breaks trance
    Eclipse the days leaving rorschach dreams
Blown by clotted lips, thick as finger thin
    Pointing the way for the future of the unborn
A new nation proud and blue, standing behind you
    Hand salute and execute the will
Fighting for rights, a clean bill of health
    Filled pockets of wealth
Lurking in shadowed stealth, framed behind
    A foggy pane for future dreams
Read again and again, just always remember when
    The hopper was full of ink, and quill screeched in night
Hidden away from normal man, who foraged the land
    To feed a silent disease of captured hearts
America is bound, never to break, sign away man made fate
    As daylight breaks.
