    Date / Time:

Show for 102708 AKA Comcast Sucks!

This week's show has gotten me so frustrated I can't even tell you.  I recorded the show twice and got cut off both time.  So here I am blogging instead.

                            1.    With the election just a few weeks away, here’s some information that you
                                     need to know for voting.

    a.       Friday, October 31: last day to early vote

    b.      Tuesday November 4, Election day – polls are open from 7 am to 7pm

    c.       Boulder County residents may check their voter registration at www.voteboulder.org
You can still register to vote by mail but this needs to be done by October 28th.  Voters can apply for mail in ballots on October 29th and 30th, but you will have to pick them up in person.

    2.      There will be a sustainable harvest  fair to concentrate on recycling, energy efficiency, renewable energy, water conservation and local agriculture.  This will be a day of fun activities on ways Longmont can become a more sustainable community, how you can shrink your environmental footprint and your ideas on the next steps for Longmont.  This will be held on Saturday, November 8,2008, from 8am to 4pm at Skyline High School.  You can register at
    www.ci.longmont.co.us or call 303-651-8910.

    3.  Remember that November 3, 2008,  The City of Longmont will begin the Single Stream Recycling program.  This program will allow you to put all your recyclable items into one co-mingled container.    You will no longer have to sort your recyclables and you will be able to put newspaper, magazines, junk mail, brown paper bags, paperboard (think Kleenex boxes), phone books, corrugated cardboard, aluminum, tin and steel cans, #’s 1-#7  plastic bottles.  The city asks that you don’t put your recyclables into plastic bags since they are not recyclable.  Nor are neon colored paper and plastic lids.  The dates for recyclables will be every other week.
Information regarding the launch of the Single Stream Recycling and the dates for recycle pick up can be found in the mail, the daily times call, at city events and the city's website.  If you need more information, please call 303-651-8416.

                                    4.  The 34th annual Longmont Turkey Trot 10K Race and 2 mile Run/Walk will take place on Saturday, November 8, 2008, at 9am at the Westview Middle School.  You can register on-line at Active.com or at any recreation facility.  For more information you can call Centennial Pool at 303-651-8404.

                                    5.  Bill Yewer, the Customer Service and Marketing Manager for Longmont Power and Communications announced that the City of Longmont is the recipient of 500,000 dollars for the New Energy Communities Grant - St. Vrain Valley School District along with the Longmont Downtown Development authority and the Platte River Valley Authority helped to write the grant request.  I spoke with Bill yesterday when I was at the store and asked a few more questions.  What I found out was that the city is not sure where the grant money will be spent since there were many projects included in the grant application.  Some of the projects included on the application were energy efficiency projects for the City buildings, school buildings, renewable energy, putting solar panels Rec Center, and solar for the civic center to name a few.

                                    6.  On Tuesday, November 11, 2008 (Veteran's Day) there will be a free concert by the United States Army Field Band and Soldiers Chorus at 7 pm at the Vance Brand Civic Auditorium.  The doors will open at 6 pm and at 6:30pm there will be a pre-concert talk by Colonel Thomas H. Palmatier.  For more information you can contact the Longmont Daily Times Call.  You must have a ticket to attend this event.

                                7.  The City of Longmont is now under the Federal Trade Commission's mandate for all American utilities to detect, prevent and mitigate identity theft.  Basically when dealing with the utilities in person, they will be asking for identification and if you are contacting them by phone they will be asking for information from the credit company Experian that only you would know.  If you are walking in to talk to the utilities personnel, and do not have American issued ID, they will be asking for a social security number to match to the name.  For more information call 303-651-8664

                                8.  The Longmont emergency unit is looking for volunteers.  If you are interested in learning more about volunteering for the open water and swift water rescue, rescue rehabilitation support, weekend duty crew, crime scene control, air cascade service, extraction, fire support services, medical coverages, traffic control, or rescue support services please contact them at
www.leu-rescue.org or call them at 303-776-6180.

    RANTINGS OF LONGMONT:

    LONGMONT CITY COUNCIL:

The Longmont city council is doing it again.  They are so far divided on issues they can't even agree on what our city attorneys are saying to them.  This time they are having a closed door session with the attorney to figure out what they are actually saying.  First of all Council Members - it's time for you to get your collective crap together and act like a council.  We are all adults and all Americans.  Let's put our collective big kid panties on and start compromising with each other.  While they are not professional politicians and we are grateful for that, it's time to get out of the council chambers and talk to one another like adults.  Get the job done and be alert - we vote.

    COMCAST SUCKS!:

After dealing with Comcast for the last few months over a bill, I am running out of patience.  After years of being Comcast customers, always paying our bills on time if not ahead and being happy with their service, they decided to do the high speed upgrade to our internet service.  We began having problems back in April or May but put up with the outages because we were told we would have better service.  Imagine our horror when we found out that comcast internet now sucks huge!  We are down on the internet at least weekly, in September we sent our payment in to Comcast as we always do using our bill pay service through First Bank (a bank I highly recommend by the way.)  and thank God we did.  Comcast is still (after almost two months) stating that we owe them money (and I suspect late fees).  They received our October payment just fine.  First Bank has now faxed our information twice to them when they said it would be a month until they got the information cleared up.  Now it's been over a month and nothing.  Everytime I call they say that we owe them more and still nothing is done.  As I said before..... Comcast sucks!  Be assured that when we are able to find something we like we will switch providers!

    UNIONS:

The firefighters here are attempting to pass the issue of a union.  I love and support my firefighters and police officers which is why I will not be voting in favor of this issue.  I have been a union member and found nothing but a chunk out of my paycheck for it.  I have never seen a union work for their people but only for their officers making deals and being corrupt.  I have also seen what unions do as a manager and they back the people who aren't working or pulling their share.  While it is true that at one point in our history unions actually had a purpose, this is no longer the case.  We have regulated business as the countries liberal masses have desired to the point that they have made unions obsolete.  Let the workers keep their pay and let the Businesses beware of treating their employees badly.  I'm voting "NO" on the union.

That's it for now.  Check out Master Schilz's special this month.  Go in, try his school out until Thanksgiving.  If you are not satisfied, you won't be billed.  Money back guarantee!  Who else can say that???  Give him a call today  303-664-0900

City Council Meeting on October 14, 2008

The atmosphere here at the Longmont City Council meeting ranges from wry humor to downright venom depending on the subject.  Throughout the evening (and it's only 9pm) several of the council members "kindly" disagree on many of the issues being put forward.  It's difficult to understand how they can get anything done when they disagree with each other so much.  Although I have to say that I'd rather have a diverse council than one that goes only in one direction.

I would recommend to the City Council that they allow the public to comment prior to beginning the evenings issues and prior to voting on any issues.

Currently Mayor Pro Tem Karen Benker has requested that $100,000 come out of the Public Safety fund to be used for firefighting equipment for the Clover Basin area.  Santos has disagreed with most of the things that have been said tonight and right now is no exception.  The reason why Mayor Pro Tem Benker has suggested this is because of an earlier public comment by Peggy Worsen (I've probably got that spelling incorrectly) requesting that this $100,000 be taken out of this account.  There is not a city attourney here to counter if this is a legal thing to do or not.  I suppose that this comes down to two different issues:  1.  This tax went in through a vote and 2. The city attourney is the one that needs to be contacted to see if this is even legal.  It looks like there is a clause that allows the council to take money out of the safety fund and use it for firefighting equipment.  Mayor Lang has also stated that he doesn't believe that this money should be taken out of the Public Safety Fund(PSF).  Mayor Pro Tem Benker has requested that finance takes a look at the PSF and since we have such a large excess (apprx. $2,000,000) that we may need to remove the tax to the PSF and give it back to the community.  So, instead of just pulling everything out and handing it back, try to figure out what the maximum amount of money would be needed if a major emergency came to Longmont.

There's also the issue about changing the budget at the last minute by Council Member Blue.  She stated that she is upset by these actions.  Amen Sister!!!

Council Member Levison moves that the planning staff in the community development staff be cut by 40%.  The motion was not seconded.

Moving money for the victims advocate fund from the general emergency fund.  Passes.

Publication - Pro Tem Benker wants $30,000 from the marketing budget and the rest from the general fund. Cost of the newsletter $126,000.  Council member Levison requests $76,000.  Confusing let me tell ya!  And I'm right here.

Council Member Levison is requestiong that a $1.00 fee per month for everyone that participates in the utility billing system and that funding go to parks and rec. - okay - that failed - Thank God!  That's it - bring it to us!

Council Member Hansen has requested that a volunteer coordinator be acquired in order to do the work in the parks and rec in order to avoid the costs.  There is a Boulder County volunteer organization and since some of Longmont is already in Boulder County, utilize the resources already there.

Mayor Lang has made a point after the upteenth issue that the council is arguing about yet again.  Business is simply not happening.  I can feel his frustration as I sit here listening to all the back and forth.  MAKE IT STOP!!!  He said we have almost 2 more hours of work and he wants to get this done.  Way to go Lang!!!

Okay - CIP funds have come from donated funds as well as from the lottery funds but need more from the genral fund(?)  How much is needed?   It will be funded.

$3.8 million for a bath house (phase I) funded for 2009 phase II redesign of parking lot and clubhouse at Sunset Golf Course  (yea for me!!)  Changing of greens, pool changes for teens and preschoolers.  Partially funded.  Past the bath house nothing is funded.  Not a chance to fund this past the bath house.

Okay, now their talking about the Entryway signs for the City of Longmont.  Isn't the sculpture a type of sign for the entry to the city?  They (the city) is talking about replacing the hand-lettered signs and putting up a sign and one with electronic messaging.  Council member Levison has requested that this motion remain unfunded until such a time as a "Brand" for the city can be found.

Playground restoration program.  All 33 playgrounds will be refurbished. Beginning with the worst ones first.  passed.

Centennial Pool - renovation - currently unfunded. Reason - to better handle the professional swim team.   Mayor Lang, "What is the price of leisure?"  Still talking and it's now 10:21pm.  Not really sure how long I can hang with this tonight since life (and the hubby) are calling.  A move to partially fund the project (the master plan) Passes.

Yawns from me.... going late but moving along now.

Okay, I have to say this is the first time that I've been at a city council meeting and I'm not sure but that next time I may just Tevo it and fast forward hours at a time.....

So, when you decide that it might be a good time to answer emails and do paperwork is it time to go???

I think so.  I'll hang for another 20 minutes if I can.....Really, now council member levison wants to try to find funds from somewhere to fund some other smaller issues - oh good God! It didn't get seconded and we're all thankful.  Who knew that coming here tonight would be so ...um... entertaining?

Okay, now it's duct cleaning - $50,000 for it... for one year... cleaning out ducts man say what???

OMG!  Everyone has that dazed look now.  Good thing they have coffee... oh wait... it may all be gone.... NOOOOOOOOOO!

Oh trust me I'm gonna be talking about this meeting on the show on Monday!

So the question being asked now by ... you guessed it... Levison is where do we get the money to do restoration on the building?  Let's start thinking in a new way - let's find ways to make money for the city - I don't know what that would be, but we have amazing, brilliant minds living here in Longmont that can figure this out.  Can't we add space to our newsletter calling out the brilliant minds?  Step up and let the public know what we don't have the money for any longer.  People have pet projects and personal preferences that I KNOW they would love to be able to offer.  STEP UP LONGMONT!!  (Oh yes, great promotional phrase - I'll offer that one to the city free of charge!)

Woo Hoo!  Who would have thought that I would have so much fodder for the show through the council meeting?

Two hours on the blog and three here..... tick tock tick tock council!

Okay - there might be a motion to adjourn.... nope - false hope.  I think I'm going to close for tonight and watch the rest later on comcast channel 3.  I'm going to miss the rest of the budget for tonight and the second public call to speak but home, bed and my love await.  Until Monday..... Make it a red letter day!
