I Volunteer Day and why I didn't cover it. What's happening in the Longmont and surrounding areas. Where will Melissa be this week?
Date / Time: 10/27/2008 7:58 PM UTC
This week's show has gotten me so frustrated I can't even tell you. I recorded the show twice and got cut off both time. So here I am blogging instead. 1. With the election just a few weeks away, here’s some information that you need to know for voting.
a. Friday, October 31: last day to early vote
b. Tuesday November 4, Election day – polls are open from 7 am to 7pm
c. Boulder County residents may check their voter registration at www.voteboulder.org You can still register to vote by mail but this needs to be done by October 28th. Voters can apply for mail in ballots on October 29th and 30th, but you will have to pick them up in person. 2. There will be a sustainable harvest fair to concentrate on recycling, energy efficiency, renewable energy, water conservation and local agriculture. This will be a day of fun activities on ways Longmont can become a more sustainable community, how you can shrink your environmental footprint and your ideas on the next steps for Longmont. This will be held on Saturday, November 8,2008, from 8am to 4pm at Skyline High School. You can register at www.ci.longmont.co.us or call 303-651-8910. 3. Remember that November 3, 2008, The City of Longmont will begin the Single Stream Recycling program. This program will allow you to put all your recyclable items into one co-mingled container. You will no longer have to sort your recyclables and you will be able to put newspaper, magazines, junk mail, brown paper bags, paperboard (think Kleenex boxes), phone books, corrugated cardboard, aluminum, tin and steel cans, #’s 1-#7 plastic bottles. The city asks that you don’t put your recyclables into plastic bags since they are not recyclable. Nor are neon colored paper and plastic lids. The dates for recyclables will be every other week. Information regarding the launch of the Single Stream Recycling and the dates for recycle pick up can be found in the mail, the daily times call, at city events and the city's website. If you need more information, please call 303-651-8416.
4. The 34th annual Longmont Turkey Trot 10K Race and 2 mile Run/Walk will take place on Saturday, November 8, 2008, at 9am at the Westview Middle School. You can register on-line at Active.com or at any recreation facility. For more information you can call Centennial Pool at 303-651-8404. 5. Bill Yewer, the Customer Service and Marketing Manager for Longmont Power and Communications announced that the City of Longmont is the recipient of 500,000 dollars for the New Energy Communities Grant - St. Vrain Valley School District along with the Longmont Downtown Development authority and the Platte River Valley Authority helped to write the grant request. I spoke with Bill yesterday when I was at the store and asked a few more questions. What I found out was that the city is not sure where the grant money will be spent since there were many projects included in the grant application. Some of the projects included on the application were energy efficiency projects for the City buildings, school buildings, renewable energy, putting solar panels Rec Center, and solar for the civic center to name a few. 6. On Tuesday, November 11, 2008 (Veteran's Day) there will be a free concert by the United States Army Field Band and Soldiers Chorus at 7 pm at the Vance Brand Civic Auditorium. The doors will open at 6 pm and at 6:30pm there will be a pre-concert talk by Colonel Thomas H. Palmatier. For more information you can contact the Longmont Daily Times Call. You must have a ticket to attend this event. 7. The City of Longmont is now under the Federal Trade Commission's mandate for all American utilities to detect, prevent and mitigate identity theft. Basically when dealing with the utilities in person, they will be asking for identification and if you are contacting them by phone they will be asking for information from the credit company Experian that only you would know. If you are walking in to talk to the utilities personnel, and do not have American issued ID, they will be asking for a social security number to match to the name. For more information call 303-651-8664 8. The Longmont emergency unit is looking for volunteers. If you are interested in learning more about volunteering for the open water and swift water rescue, rescue rehabilitation support, weekend duty crew, crime scene control, air cascade service, extraction, fire support services, medical coverages, traffic control, or rescue support services please contact them at www.leu-rescue.org or call them at 303-776-6180.
LONGMONT CITY COUNCIL:
The Longmont city council is doing it again. They are so far divided on issues they can't even agree on what our city attorneys are saying to them. This time they are having a closed door session with the attorney to figure out what they are actually saying. First of all Council Members - it's time for you to get your collective crap together and act like a council. We are all adults and all Americans. Let's put our collective big kid panties on and start compromising with each other. While they are not professional politicians and we are grateful for that, it's time to get out of the council chambers and talk to one another like adults. Get the job done and be alert - we vote.
COMCAST SUCKS!:
After dealing with Comcast for the last few months over a bill, I am running out of patience. After years of being Comcast customers, always paying our bills on time if not ahead and being happy with their service, they decided to do the high speed upgrade to our internet service. We began having problems back in April or May but put up with the outages because we were told we would have better service. Imagine our horror when we found out that comcast internet now sucks huge! We are down on the internet at least weekly, in September we sent our payment in to Comcast as we always do using our bill pay service through First Bank (a bank I highly recommend by the way.) and thank God we did. Comcast is still (after almost two months) stating that we owe them money (and I suspect late fees). They received our October payment just fine. First Bank has now faxed our information twice to them when they said it would be a month until they got the information cleared up. Now it's been over a month and nothing. Everytime I call they say that we owe them more and still nothing is done. As I said before..... Comcast sucks! Be assured that when we are able to find something we like we will switch providers!
UNIONS:
The firefighters here are attempting to pass the issue of a union. I love and support my firefighters and police officers which is why I will not be voting in favor of this issue. I have been a union member and found nothing but a chunk out of my paycheck for it. I have never seen a union work for their people but only for their officers making deals and being corrupt. I have also seen what unions do as a manager and they back the people who aren't working or pulling their share. While it is true that at one point in our history unions actually had a purpose, this is no longer the case. We have regulated business as the countries liberal masses have desired to the point that they have made unions obsolete. Let the workers keep their pay and let the Businesses beware of treating their employees badly. I'm voting "NO" on the union.
That's it for now. Check out Master Schilz's special this month. Go in, try his school out until Thanksgiving. If you are not satisfied, you won't be billed. Money back guarantee! Who else can say that??? Give him a call today 303-664-0900
