Uke-in_with_Joyce: Ukulele Jam and Sing-a-long

I am passionate about music and believe that making music is magic. Although I play various instruments, I have chosen the ukulele as my primary source of joy and sharing the magic with others. My goal is to teach the world to play ukulele, make a joyful noise, and send it out into the universe.

    The Best Laid Plans...

Well heck!  The cable went out 30 minutes before broadcast time.  During the broadcast the sound was intermittent.  But...I will not be twarted.  Vicki and I will reconstruct the show so folks can download and play-a-long.

It was fun!  Vicki was very calm and patient.  We found out that there was a delay between my playing and singing and her singing along.  Who knew?

I am excited about this adventure and will continue to include it in my favorite things to do for 2009.  The next show is scheduled for Jan 19th at 5:30pm CST.

Until then, keep strumming and smiling.

    Launching Ukulele Jam show today

There is always excitement when starting a new adventure.  That is true for me today.

My daughter, Vicki, has encouraged me to "take to the airwaves" via the internet and BlogTalkRadio.  Uke-in with Joyce launches at 5:30pm CST today.

I will be sitting at home in front of my computer, playing ukulele into the phone.  Through the mysterious magic of technology, other ukulele fans will be able to login and Jam with me for 30 minutes.  They will also be able to post messages in the chat room.  I won't be taking calls for this first show.  I will be strumming and talking and hoping that everyone will join in for the magic of making music and the joy of playing ukulele.

  • Date / Time:

    Segment 1_ January 5th at 5:30pm CST

Opening song Hail, Hail the Gang’s All Here

The focus of Uke-In’ with Joyce is on new players and beginning level players who want to jam with others.

To play along this session, you will need to know the C, G7, C progression and the F, C7, F progression.

Since this broadcast is an extension of my online Intro to Ukulele Yahoo Group, let’s warm up by playing four songs posted in the Files from that group. We will play each song in C and in F so folks can fit their voice to the key.

    1.    He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands – C & F

    2.    Buffalo Gals – C & F

    3.    John Jacob – C & F

    4.    Hokey Pokey –C & F

Songs from Uke-In’ Around the Campfire

Where can I buy an ukulele?

Go to your local music store and check out their inventory or order a ukulele online from a company that will allow returns and/or trade-ins.

I teach people to play ukulele.  I am a player and cheerleader for playing ukulele and never considered selling.  However, I became a Lanikai dealer for Hohner in 2008 because I wanted to provide affordable ukuleles to new players.  I prefer to provide ukuleles locally, but can ship to other locations as well.

What kind of ukulele should I buy?

Many people ask the question, "What kind of ukulele should I buy?".

Buy the best ukulele you afford. Don't let your budget keep you from getting started. You can buy an ukulele for $25 or $250, or $2,500 or more.  Your choice depends upon whether you are testing the learn-to-play waters or already play an instrument.

Most folks tend to buy an inexpensive ukulele but find that the quality they need to make music isn't there.  It is fine to start with a student/beginner ukulele to get the feel of the instrument and to determine if the size and playability are right for you.

  • Date / Time:

Start at the beginning - learn to strum

Many people have heard Jake and IZ play ukulele and want to play like that.  Jake plays intricate instrumental pieces and IZ developed a strum and style of singing that endeared him to his audiences.

It is easy to learn a few chords and strum an accompaniment for singing.  Many songs use only 2 or 3 chords.  Add the fourth most common chord and the doors to music fly open. Start with the Key of C and enjoy.

Developing some right hand technique goes a long way towards developing your style.

  • Date / Time:

What's your goal in playing ukulele?

If you received an ukulele (oo-koo-lay-lay) for Christmas, the next step is learning to play.  There are many sites online for beginning ukulele players.  If you have never played any instrument, and want to learn to play ukulele - start with an Introduction to Ukulele. Go to http://www.ukuleleuniverse.com and click on Free Instruction: Learn to Play Yahoo Group.
You can strum and sing-a-long to hundreds of songs by learning four chords.  After you become comfortable with chording and strumming - something like rubbing your tummy and patting your head at the same time - you can add new chords and strums to your musical skill box.

    Have fun!
