Where was Jack Buck at the end of this one?

    Um, wow.

Boston Celtics 97, Los Angeles Lakers 91.
NBA Finals: Celtics 3, Lakers 1.

Bottom line, this certainly was a classic game, in the sense that the first half domination by LA was almost as shocking as Boston's massive comeback in the second half.

I'm not sure how that just happened, and I'm pretty sure that the entire city of Los Angeles may be speechless--that is the portion of LA that actually cares about basketball and the Lakers and not just being seen, being heard or being famous; so, in other words, pretty much no one who actually attended the game.

A 24 -point deficit at one point, an 18-point halftime deficit, the largest in NBA Finals history. I'm just completely shocked, but in reality, I shouldn't be. The Celtics got back to doing what made them successful all season. They spread the floor, opened up shooting lanes for their perimeter players and guys like Eddie House and James Posey made big shots when they had to. Both Posey and House were excellent on the defensive end as well, Posey particularly. You've got to think that Posey's past with the Miami Heat when they won in 2005 had something to do with how well he played down the stretch.

And for some reason, the Lakers are completely unable to play in the third quarter. For the fourth game in a row the Celtics have dominated coming out of the gate in the second half. To be honest, Doc Rivers is out-coaching Phil Jackson and that itself is shocking.  When Doc went to the small lineup with House, Posey, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen around Kevin Garnett, the Lakers were unable to keep up with them and stay with their rotations. The Celtics were outstanding in their pick and roll offense, moving the ball on the outside and being able to consistently beat LA's defensive rotations.

Another big reason was the Celtics were very aggressive in the second half on Kobe Bryant. They pressured him and really made life difficult for the Lakers moving the ball up the floor on offense. Phil said after the game that he was worried when Kobe didn't have a field goal in the first half because he knew the Celtics would be aware of Kobe looking for his shot early and often in the second half. He said that he needed the role players to make shots and play well, and they didn't. That in itself might be the biggest reason why Boston was able to take advantage in the third quarter.

Guys like Lamar Odom and Pau Gasol who were so huge in the first half disappeared again in the second half--not to mention, Sasha Vujacic. Sasha, game 3's hero, game 4's ghost. He missed shot after shot after shot, including one in the final ticks when LA still had a shot, a mystifying feat considering Kobe was on the floor. That's another game LA could have hit a big jumper late in the 4th and instead of the ball being in Kobe's hands, it was in Vujacic's and he blew it. How has Kobe not threatened his family's life yet? Everyone talks about how machine-like Vujacic is, but maybe the most important thing is his ability to ignore those evil stares from Kobe. You know he's going to get a lot of those in the next couple days.

Now heading into Game 5 on Saturday night, LA looks done. I'm just predicting a furious first half where Kobe just completely ignores his teammates, goes into "Ko-ME" mode and fades as Boston isolates him and uses their outstanding help defense to corner and pressure him. It's going to take a massive effort from Kobe to win game 5 and extend the series to Boston, but even if they get to a Game 6, I don't expect this series to end up in LA's hands. They're not taking 3 in a row against this defense, especially if they get the type of balanced scoring they got tonight.

I'm still in complete shock... To quote the great Jack Buck... "I don't believe what I just saw."
