War on drugs: Are pharmaceuticals to blame?

Physician and author explores growing public distrust of American health care system Anyone watching TV these days would assume Americans are plagued with erectile dysfunction, an overacting bladder and clinical depression. Pharmaceutical companies spend billions of dollars each year to make sure consumers know about these and other conditions. In fact, pharmaceutical companies spend 2.5 times the cost of research on marketing their drugs. But according to a recent article in The Wall Street Journal, some pharmaceutical companies are being accused of unlawfully marketing their drugs and putting consumers at risk of suffering dangerous side effects. This announcement comes in a time when Americans spend over $200 billion each year on prescription drugs. Physician and author Robert B. Bolin, M.D. explores the reality of illicit pharmaceutical marketing in his new fast-paced thriller, The Broken Parachute Man (i-Universe, January 2009), which sheds light on the intriguing world of the modern American medical system and pharmaceutical industry. “The main purpose for writing this book was to look behind the scenes at what might motivate the drug industry. All through my professional medical career, pharmaceutical and traditional medicine seemed at odds when they could be working together,” says Bolin who has spent more than 40 years in the medical field. “It was greed that seemed to be the major obstacle.” The Broken Parachute Man follows Clyde Young, a mediocre drug executive who agrees to present findings on a new premium drug at the FDA’s Public Advisory Committee Meeting in Portland, Ore. But while in the air, Young’s flight is hijacked by terrorists. When Young refuses to follow the terrorists’ orders, he is given a parachute and thrown from the plane. Young survives and makes his way to Las Vegas where no one but ruffians believe his fanciful story. While trying to figure out why he was singled out by the terrorists, Young and his new allies discover that hi

Author Jeanne McNaney discusses her book The Legend of Honey Hollow

Author Jeanne McNaney applauds the schools who are tackling environmental issues with kids early on, but says teaching them about the future of our planet doesn’t stop there. Outside cozy neighborhoods and groomed suburban streets, threatened species continue to be added to the endangered species list, rainforests are being destroyed and global warming worsens. How can we go a step further in educating our kids about all aspects of preserving Mother Earth and all of its inhabitants? To inform young readers about wildlife conservation and endangered species preservation, Jeanne, a mother of three and Greenwich, Conn., community activist, presents her debut book The Legend of Honey Hollow (Ovation Books, January 2009, 978-0-9790275-9-8, $16.95). The story is intended to teach children about the different endangered bears of the world and the importance of community, sharing and trust.

James Alexander Protzman discussess new novel Jesus Swept

"Do good. Be nice. Have fun," is the philosophy presented in Jesus Swept, the first novel from political blogger and freelance writer James Alexander Protzman. When Gary Gray discovers a mysterious silver bracelet on the shores of Myrtle Beach, the words engraved on the object transform him into Jesus overnight. Down-and-out hooligans Mark and Luke jump on the bandwagon, sweeping floors and evangelizing up the Carolina coast. The novel also follows Hook and Sinker, Liz, Frank, and Dog, with a sprinkling of other kooky characters and mischief in between. An irreverent, satirical look at southern religious sensibilities, Jesus Swept is a witty, provocative novel that espouses the importance of hope, kindness and good old fashioned fun. About the Author: The product of a Southern Baptist Navy family, Protzman graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1972 and served in the US Navy for five years. He earned his Master of Arts in journalism from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill in 1980, and over the next 30 years built a successful marketing and research firm.
