    Why Sea Buckthorn?

    Sea Buckthorn (Hippophae Rhamnoides) is a deciduous tree or shrub naturally occurring over very large territories in Asia and Europe (China, Mongolia, India, Tibet, Nepal, Russia, Ukraine, Great Britain, Sweden and Norway). It originated in the Himalayan Mountains, where itʼs natural hardiness and vigor allow it to thrive at elevations up to 14,000 feet.

    The unique features of the plant and its fruit, especially its combination of nutritional and medical value with high environmental value have contributed to the substantial interest and recognition it has received internationally from researchers, medical practitioners, environmental groups and farmers.  

     It is considered one of the most important natural resources of China and Russia. The plant species is over 40 million years old.

    Sea Buckthorn is known in China (since the Tang dynasty), Russia and Europe as one of natureʼs most incredible medicinal plants. Its small, pea sized, bright orange berries have been cherished for over 1,200 years for their incredible healing, nutritive and therapeutic properties. The berries have no match in the plant kingdom for their content of carotenoids (Pro Vitamin A, tocopherols (Vitamin E), Vitamin K, Vitamin C, essential fatty acids, Vitamin B-12, etc

    The classic Tibetan medical text – Sibu Yidian, written in the Eighth century – devotes thirty chapters to the medicinal and nutritional uses of Sea Buckthorn (to tonify Yin and strengthen Yang). The ancient Greek scholars – Dioscarides and Theophastus – wrote about its healing powers. Genghis Khan and his armies drank the juice of Sea Buckthorn fruit to increase stamina and speed up wound healing. In Mongolia it was believed to the source of “life energy”. In India it has been part of their Ayurveda medical system for over 500
    years. Modern clinical research and medical use started in the Russia in the 1950s. It was listed in the Russian Pharmacopeia in the late 1950s and the Chinese Pharmacopeia as a medicine in 1977.

    Considering many centuries of traditional use and hundreds of published modern research and clinical studies, Sea Buckthorn has been proven to be an effective naturalremedy for  health problems related to: cardiovascular disease, liver disease, skin disorders, inflammatory diseases, immune dysfunction, and diseases caused by free radical damage (see section detailing medicinal applications).

    The Russian cosmonauts used Sea Buckthorn beverages in space for over 20 years to enhance their health and resistance to stress (taken orally) and cosmic radiation (using a cream). Sea Buckthorn is the first juice in outer space! In 1986 Sea Buckthorn preparations were used to treat Chernobyl victims for radiation damage.

    China designated a Sea Buckthorn beverage, as itʼs official Olympic team drink for the 2008 Seoul Olympic Games. 

    Folklore says that Sea Buckthorn was the favorite food of Pegasus (the winged flying horse of Greek mythology) due to its properties for improving the coat of a horse and making it shiny. Even Xena (televisions warrior princess) said “Sea Buckthorn, it grows wild here and the oil works wonders on horses and people”.

    Sea Buckthorn Berry contains 50 times the Vitamin C of an orange and there is enough Vitamin C in the berries of the plants of the world to meet the dietary requirements of the entire human population.

    Sea Buckthorn - The Plant


    Sea Buckthorn Berry     grows in sandy soil in cold climates (mountainous regions of Russia, China, Tibet, Nepal, Europe, Canada) and withstands severe weather (down to-40 degrees). Besides its medicinal uses it is used for erosion control and reforestation. The roots fix nitrogen and enhance the soil ecosystem (like soybean). It has a huge root system. There are over 3 million acres of Sea Buckthorn planted in China. One cultivated acre provides about 3 tons of the berries.

    There are both female and male plants and they get from 6 to 13 feet high. The orange berries remain on the bushes all winter. In China – over 130 bird species depend solely on the berries for food. The plant is naturally pest resistant so typically no pesticides are used on the crop.   Synterra Health
