My sister called me the other day right after Congress failed to pass a bill to bail out Wall street. She asked me what to do. I told her to call her financial planner to seek their expertise. I also told her not to panic, to stay the course in what she is doing for her budget and savings plan, to take a deep breath and to keep talking to family and friends to help her manage through this economic anxiety. Our conversation continued, and we also talked about that we can only control so much in our life, that we do the best we can to live in this world and to take care of our families. The rest we have to let go and to trust.
My parents lived through the Great Depression and what they taught me and my family is that hard times happen in life and things happen beyond our control. They also taught us that when those hard times come, it is important to keep working hard, to keep doing your best, and to lean in to one another, to look out for each other and to care for one other as family, friends, community and neighbors. They taught us not to panic, to keep a level-head, to do our best to live responsibly with integrity and most importantly, to live a life of prayer always and at all times which will help you keep a perspective especially during the difficult segments in life. They modeled for us that living a spiritual life, a life of prayer and seeking the ways of God, will strengthen you and give you hope.
Yes, these are incredibly bleak times for our nation. The current economic and financial meltdown affects every aspect of the way we live in our culture, and it increases our levels of stress, worry, anxiety, and fear almost to the edge of panic at times.
So when those waves of stress and anxiety wash over you, take a deep breath. Better yet, take a lot of deep breaths. And pray for a perspective to keep a level-head. Let us do our best to live responsibly and with integrity. And let us lean in to one another a little more to support each other along the way. We are all in this together no matter what our economic status or class.
This day, may you breathe in the perspective and peace of the Spirit. Courage!

Poetry is one of my favorite genres of literature. I savor the works of Mary Oliver, David Whyte and Denise Levertov to name a few. In talking with a friend of mine recently, I had a difficult time finding the right words to define poetry so I went online and looked up the definition.
This definition of poetry comes from About.com by Mark Flanagan: “Poetry is an imaginative awareness of experience expressed through meaning, sound, and rhythmic language choices so as to evoke an emotional response. Poetry has been known to employ meter and rhyme, but this is by no means necessary…. The very nature of poetry as an authentic and individual mode of expression makes it nearly impossible to define.”
I thought about this definition of poetry with spirituality. For me, spirituality is about having all one’s energy moving in the same direction - flowing toward the One who created you, who fashioned you into being, who breathed love into the very soul of who you are. Spirituality is about taking seriously your relationship with God, being mindful of God in your own life, and waking up to a wider perspective of life.
With these definitions in mind, reading poetry can help us connect and deepen our spirituality by grabbing our attention and causing us to pause momentarily to ponder more deeply the mystery of life. Poetry can be a tool to deepen one’s spirituality by helping us connect our deepest emotional experiences of God with the language of rhythm, meter, and sound. Reading poetry can help us deepen our authenticity of spirit.
What expressions of poetry do you like to read? The classics? Contemporary? Freestyle poetry? Metered and rhyming poetry? Haiku? Poetry from different cultures? Who are some of your favorite poets?
May poetry help you stop and ponder the Mystery this day.

Let us pray for all those who debate politics,
Who care for the concern of our nation,
Who race to the house of leadership.
May they be mindful that they serve people of all social classes,
May they be attentive to the needs of the poor,
the vulnerable,
the worried,
the stressed,
all those who struggle from paycheck to paycheck.
May their conscience guide them to justice.
May they have tunnel vision
and a sharp focus on the issues that matter,
and not a glance toward slander or personal gain.
May Your Spirit O God lead them in their decision-making.
For this we pray.
Hear us O God. Amen.

Peace I leave with you;
my peace I give to you.
I do not give to you as the world gives.
Do not let your hearts be troubled,
and do not let them be afraid.
John 14:27 NRSV
Consider these questions for reflection when praying with this passage:
In what ways do you experience God’s peace?
How is God’s peace different for you than a vision of world peace?
In what ways is your heart troubled these days?
What fears cause you to worry?
How do you live in trust of Christ words of assurance?

Wind of Heaven,
May we listen to your Spirit moving in the air of Autumn:
A season of transition, a season of change;
A season of harvest, a bounty of goodness;
A season of mystery, of dying and letting go;
A season of trust, of new life being promised again.
May we take time to find moments of quiet in our life.
May we be inspired to pay closer attention.
Spirit of the Earth,
May beauty emerge within us.
May the vivid colors of our gifts come into view.
May the branches of our souls reveal our essential core of goodness.
O Great Spirit of Autumn,
Grant us courage to live your wisdom and witness your beauty.
May we fall into the mystery and step forward in trust.
May we discover moments of rest and a harvest of nourishment.
Great Spirit of Autumn,
Thank you for the blessing of this day. Amen.

There’s a line from Psalm 95 that says “If today you hear God’s voice, harden not your heart.” Last weekend, I had a great conversation with a friend of mine on the question of hearing the voice of God in our lives. How do you know when you hear the voice of God?
Brief clarification: I think there are a few people who are gifted with literally hearing the voice of God. In other words, God speaks to them directly. I greatly respect those who have this gift. What I am talking about is how God speaks to most people, myself included, indirectly through other people, nature, or other life experiences. For example, seeing a sunset reminds me of God’s presence and I often hear God say to me “you have been blessed with life this day.” My response is most always, “Wow God! Thank you and please do it again!”
So back to the questions: how do you hear the voice of God in your life? And how do you know when you hear the voice of God? How do you know? Is it God’s voice? Or the voice of your ego? Or a negative motive - such as greed or pride? How do you know?
In the Christian tradition, this process of listening, questioning and pondering God’s voice in our lives is known as discernment. Discernment is defined as the process of showing keen insight and good judgment.
For me, the process of discernment is a daily and lifelong practice. I find talking with my close friends as well as a spiritual director (one who is a listening companion in my spiritual journey) to be most helpful in recognizing and listening to God’s voice in my life. Also, I experience God’s voice in the gut of my being - I feel a positive “yes” deep within. This is an affirmation of God’s presence in my life.
So back to the questions: how do you hear the voice of God in your life? And how do you know when you hear the voice of God? Recognize that these are ongoing questions lived out daily. How are you being attentive to God? I welcome your thoughts, your keen insight and wisdom from your good judgment.
“If today you hear the voice of God, harden not your heart” (Psalm 95)
Blessings this day!
