“When you pray, move your feet.”
African Proverb
Compassionate God,
You who hear the cry of the poor,
Hear the cries of those
who hunger for food and life throughout our world:
those in urban and farm areas who suffer
from drought, famine,
political instability, and economic disaster.
Merciful God,
You who call all your followers to action,
Move our feet toward justice,
Give us strength to walk our talk with integrity,
Listen to our plea, and
Guide our feet in the ways of peace, justice and love. Amen.

…I have set before you life and death,
blessings and curses.
Choose life
so that you and your descendants may live….
Deuteronomy 30:19 NRSV
Consider these questions for reflection and prayer with this passage:
What in your life is life-giving and energizing for you? What are the blessings in your life?
Are there any issues in your life that are not life-giving, energy-draining or destructive? What helps you face these issues?
When facing challenges, what helps you make life-giving decisions?
In what ways will you choose life this day?
What do you ask of God to help you choose and live life in all things and in all ways?

O God, you have searched me, you have found me,
and you know me.
You know when I sit and when I stand.
You know when I succeed and when I fail.
You are familiar with all my ways.
You know my thoughts even before I think them.
And even before I speak, you know what I will say, O God.
You are behind me and before me, and
you have laid your hand up on me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me.
O God, you are awesome.
Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I run from your presence?
If I climb the Rocky Mountains or travel from Boston to Seattle,
you are there.
If I sail around the world or stay in my back yard,
even there, you will be with me and guide me.
If I think the darkness can hide me, I am wrong.
For the darkness is like the day to you.
For you created me O God,
And I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
All your works are wonderful, and I know that full well.
Even before I was made in that secret place O God,
you knew all my days before one of them began.
To me, you are like a precious jewel.
I have found a treasure.
Search me, O God, and know my heart.
Test me O God, and know my anxious thoughts.
See if there is any offensive way in me, and get rid of it.
And lead me in the way everlasting. Amen.

I watched the closing ceremonies of the Olympic Games in Beijing with awe and hope, especially seeing all the athletes celebrating in the center of the Bird’s Nest stadium. It was one of the best cultural mixes of nations and peoples - all celebrating the spirit of the games together in a positive, good-hearted and well-meaning environment. I was thinking that if nations can do that in athletic sporting events, then why can’t we do that in other events of life - be that politics, religion, trade, commerce, and life in general.
Think about it. What would the world be like if we were to live seeking understanding from one another while celebrating and affirming our different cultures and lifestyles? What would be different if we lived with one another in a positive, good-hearted and well-meaning environment? That we celebrated the mere fact of being alive as a blessing and the opportunity to participate in life as gift?
Now, I know that in nearly all the Olympic Games there are a few poor sports, some who try to cheat, and some who try to get by with doping. And then there was one Olympics marred by the horrible tragedy in the killing of Israeli athletes in 1972 in Munich. In spite of these awful events, the good will of the athletes and the overall spirit of the Games still prevail.
So think about it. How would the world be different? How would we live differently?
“The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.” -
Sound familiar?
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” -
This week, in the game of life, may we take part, work through any struggle, and do our best.
Blessings this day!

My best friend is my anam cara, that’s “soul-friend” in Gaelic. We connect on matters of the heart, share the deepest desires of our soul, and pray together in spirit. This gift of a soul friend is a sacred blessing in my life that I treasure dearly.
We talk often on the phone and nearly every evening we check in with each other asking three soulful questions: 1) What was the best part of your day? 2) What was the hardest part of your day? 3) Where did you see God this day?
Sharing these questions and our insights help us connect the spirit of God in ordinary moments of daily living. It is a daily process that helps us deepen our soul and connect our hearts more tangibly with God.
Here are a few suggestions to help tend to your soul:
Do you have a soul friend in your life, a spouse, partner or significant other that you can reflect and share the deepest matters of your heart and soul?
Spend some time with this person reflecting each evening on these 3 questions:
What was the best part or most life-giving part of your day?
What was the hardest part or most challenging part of your day?
Where did you see God in your day?
If you do not have a soul friend, you may want to find a way to reflect on these questions by yourself either by journaling, saying them aloud each evening, or quietly praying with these questions just before going to bed each night.
The goal is to find a way to reflect on these questions each evening as often as possible. After several weeks see if there are any patterns emerging in connecting with the Spirit of God in your life. Sharing these questions and insights with a significant other can be helpful in keeping you committed to this soulful process.
These are only suggestions; take what is useful and ignore the rest. My prayer is that you have or discover an anam cara in your life that helps you connect more deeply with your Higher Power. Blessings this day!

Generous God,
Your love washes over us like the rain upon the earth,
but sometimes the rain and the wind can be too much.
Be with those who suffer under heavy winds and strong downpours, who endure hurricanes and tropical storms,
who wade through high waters and face flooding,
who trudge through mud and devastation,
who live without power.
We pray for all those who have died in hurricanes and its aftermath, for young and old who have died in car accidents,
and who have drowned in treacherous waters.
Grant them peace and eternal rest.
Comfort those who grieve.
Shelter those who have lost home and land.
Strengthen those who have weathered the destruction.
Give hope to those who work to recover and rebuild.
May all flood waters recede to stillness once more.
May your Spirit inspire quick relief efforts
and empower the human will to triumph over disaster.
For this we pray; hear us O God. Amen.

Happy is the person who meditates on wisdom
and reasons intelligently,
who reflects in their heart on her ways
and ponders her secrets,
perusing her like a hunter, and lying in wait on her paths;
who peers through her windows and listens at her doors;
who camps near her house and fastens their tent peg to her walls; who pitches their tent near her,
and so occupies an excellent lodging place;
who places their children under her boughs;
who is sheltered by her from the heat,
and dwells in the midst of her glory.
Sirach 14:20-27 NRSV
While praying with this passage consider these questions for reflection:
What kind of wisdom are you seeking?
How do you recognize God’s wisdom in the world?
In what ways do you seek God’s wisdom in your life?
What gifts of wisdom do you carry in your heart?
In what ways do you share the gifts of wisdom with others?
