Overcoming Apathy The 9 Illusions That Hold You Captive

Justin Dixon (www.alittlebetter.net) Justin is a wise soul in a 23 year old body. He's a blogger who decided to change his mind and elevate his life. Here is his story. A few years ago I had an idea that terrified me. Some day I am likely to get married. In that marriage, I am likely to have kids. Any kids that grow up with me as a dad, are likely to pick up my bad habits … *screams from the sheer horror*. Thus launched a quest of self-improvement. When I started this quest I quickly found that I couldn’t change my bad habits all at once. Every time I started to get somewhere I’d stress out and end up right back where I was. Finally I tried something that worked! I slowed down. I started learning to be patient with myself, and little by little I’ve made change. I’ve been at it for three years now. I am still in this process. I have a long way to go. I have learned a few things on the way. For example I have: * Re-prioritized my life * Improved my self-image * Improved my overall attitude * Started eating healthier (semi-vegetarian) * Read a ton of books * Stopped making excuses for my goals * Improved my people skills * Surrounded myself with positive influences * Overall become a more genuine me * Started taking my dreams seriously * Diminished the power of excuses in my life * Greatly Increased my focus Perhaps, something I’ve learned can help you make changes in your life, and achieve the goals that are important to you.

Midlife Crisis? Crisis at Midlife? Crazy?

When Amy Harden responds to a post at her forum the question isn't about SEO, or how Twitter really works or even about the latest national drama. The members of this forum (http://womeninmlc.lefora.com) are often men-- who are watching their wives walk out the door, their serenity dissolve, their children panic and their financial future threatened by this perfect storm they call MLC; Midlife Crisis.

A recent question posted at the forum was from a woman who described a complete lack of understanding about her own thoughts and actions over the last several years in one profound sentence: "I don't recognize me anymore."

Amy, always the Shepherdess, with compassion and wisdom, responded to the new member:

"I would highly encourage you to read
The Walk Out Woman or The Worn Out Woman.
Also read as much as you can here at the forum, especially in the Women's forum...continue to write and tell us your feelings.  You have had a tough time...you are exhausted mentally, physically and spiritually. Crisis at Mid-life is when you are having difficulty with coping with the mind , body and spirit...they all seem to clash at once...and it sure does sound like you may be building an MLC fire. You have come to the right place...Be gentle with yourself...knowing that this is truly a time of discovery....it doesn't have to be a time of destruction." -Shepherdess

On Tuesday, October 27th at 7PM, Lu and I will be talking with Amy about what trends she's observed at this forum she created for the people she both compassionately encourages and firmly rebukes when necessary.   We'll also talk about the Yellow Brick Road metaphor and her upcoming debut as an Expert Mentor Host at the SSTI mentoring network that launches January 11th, 2010.  Be sure and tune in- whether you're younger than midlife (because your time's coming, honey!) or if you're older than midlife (because someone you know is going to need your help!) and especially if you're a married midlifer. Then pass the link to the archive of the show along to all your midlife friends. Who knows- the marriage you save may be your own!

    MJ Ryan Author of AdaptAbility

Learn the secrets to taking any change in stride. Change is hard,” we say, and it is even harder when change is forced upon us. In today’s tough times, we may be forced to reinvent our career or downsize our lives; at any point in life, we may lose a love or a dream. Our first reaction to change we didn’t ask for may be to rail against fate. But what if we could see past today’s turmoil and spot the opportunities that lie within unasked-for change? That is the promise of AdaptAbility, bestselling author and executive coach M.J. Ryan’s paradigm-shifting new book on not merely surviving but thriving when change is absolutely required. Why is it so hard to accept change? Paradoxically, it is for the very reason that our brains usually work so well; we are designed to learn something and make it automatic. The problem is that when circumstances change, our “efficient” brains keep trying to do things the same old way. In AdaptAbility, Ryan provides strategies to retrain your brain and optimize your response to change, step by step: by first accepting the new reality, then expanding your options, and finally, taking effective action. She offers cutting edge tools for becoming calmer and less fearful, more flexible, creative and resourceful in your thinking. Best of all, as your “adapt-ability” increases, so does your confidence that, whatever life sends your way, you will be able to face it and find new ways to flourish. M.J. Ryan is one of the creators of the New York Times bestselling Random Acts of Kindness series and the author of The Happiness Makeover (nominated for the 2005 Books for Better Living award in the Motivational category), Attitudes of Gratitude, The Power of Patience, Trusting Yourself, The Giving Heart, and 365 Health and Happiness Boosters, among other titles. Altogether, there are 1.75 million copies of her titles in print.
