Amos 'n' Andy creators Gosden and Correll were white actors familiar with minstrel traditions. Amos 'n' Andy was a situation comedy based on archetypes of African-Americans and popular in the United States from the 1920s through the 1950s. Bud Abbott was a veteran burlesque entertainer from a show business family. He had worked at Coney Island and ran his own burlesque touring companies. At first he worked as a straight man to his wife Betty, then with veteran burlesque comedians like Harry Steppe and Harry Evanson.
