Reporting from Baghdad - The U.S. military has freed five Iranian diplomats held since 2007, handing them over to the Iraqi government prior to their planned departure for Tehran, Iranian and Iraqi officials said today. "The American government has handed over the [Iranian] hostages and prisoners to the Iraqi government," Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Hasan Qashqavi told Iranian state TV. He said the prisoners had been received in person by Prime Minister Nouri Maliki at his office in Baghdad. Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari said he had met with the diplomats and that they are "happy and safe."

An Iranian Embassy spokesman in Baghdad said the five would be handed over to the Baghdad embassy later in the day. The U.S. military refused to confirm or deny the report, saying it had a policy of not commenting on individual releases.

According to Zebari, the five were freed under the terms of the security agreement between the U.S. and Iraq signed in December, under which the U.S. is to hand over all detainees to the Iraqi government by the end of the year.

"There wasn't any deal," he said. "This has been there for some time that this would happen. It was part of the agreement for the Americans, part of withdrawing and handing over security responsibilities."

The diplomats had been detained in January 2007 in the northern city of Irbil in the autonomous region of Kurdistan at the height of what amounted to a cold war raging between the U.S. and Iran over influence in Iraq. The U.S. military subsequently said they were not diplomats but members of the elite Quds Force of Iran's Revolutionary Guard and accused them of arming, funding and training Shiite militias in Iraq.

Relations between the U.S. and Iran improved somewhat following a series of talks between the two sides in Baghdad, and two other diplomats detained in Baghdad were freed. But the continued detention of the five remained a source of friction between Tehran and Washington.

President Obama has promised to improve relations further with Tehran by pursuing dialogue, but the prospects of a thaw have been diminished by Iran's harsh crackdown against demonstrators protesting the disputed results of last month's election

It started out as a frantic Facebook message plea for help about a tense confrontation at an airport in Istanbul between Amir Farshad Ebrahimi (above, right) and Turkish security officials in March 2008. Over the course of more than a year's worth of phone conversations with Ebrahimi, 33, and a visit to his Berlin home a few months ago, his amazing story, detailed in Thursday's Times, emerged: from pre-adolescent Basiji warrior on the front lines of the Iran-Iraq war to hardline militia member who hobnobbed with the likes of Mojataba Khamenei (above, left), the son of Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, to jailed dissident, to exiled blogger. “His story does really crystallize the disillusionment of the children of the revolution,” said Pooya Dayanim, a Los Angeles-based Iranian opposition activist who befriended Ebrahimi over the years. Some elements of his extraordinary story are difficult to confirm. But much is verifiable through documents and photographs he provided, including rare 1990s photo of Mojataba above, and accounts in the Iranian press. As a onetime member of the Revolutionary Guard, he says his military superiors were impressed by his enthusiasm and writing skills and one day, they recommended him for the Quds Force, the unit described by U.S. officials as the Islamic Republic’s elite branch for overseas subterfuge. The 19-year-old readily agreed.

Ebrahimi’s claim of having been a Quds Force member is difficult to verify. Iran has never officially acknowledged that the unit even exists.

Though ostensibly in charge of photocopying press clips for the ambassador in Beirut in 1997 to 1998, he says he had a weightier portfolio: helping oversee Hezbollah’s procurement of medium-range missiles transported via buses from Syria, and sending Shiite militiamen to Iran for training.

Ebrahimi offers evidence of his work, including a document he says was the equivalent of his discharge papers (at right), evidence that he lived in Beirut and training manuals he designed.

But he says many of his records and personal effects were lost in several raids on his parents’ home in Tehran.

His time abroad, he says, showed him how Iran funds and supports allies such as Hezbollah in Lebanon or Hamas in the Gaza Strip. He believes Iranians wanted to ensure maximum deniability while building up long-term loyalty.

“Iranians don’t send the weapons directly,” he said. “We give you money. You want to build hospitals, or buy missiles? If you want to build missiles, here’s a contact that will help.”
One day, he recalled, an argument had broke out between the Beirut Quds force commander and Iran’s ambassador to Lebanon, some minor point about domestic Iranian politics.

He watched as his boss humiliated the ambassador, who apologized and gave way to the military man.

Repeatedly he said he saw how Iran’s secret organizations lord over its visible institutions.

Repeatedly, the patrician ambassador in Beirut told him and his Quds Force colleagues to keep his dealings with Hezbollah out of the embassy walls. And repeatedly the 20-something men ignored and laughed at him.

From the beginning, the Quds Force worked to tap Ebrahimi’s communications gifts. He claims he was placed in the directorate of intelligence and operations and quickly sent off to North Korea for six months of training in counter-intelligence and propaganda.

His instruction centered on "soft power": interrogation techniques, crowd control and media strategies.

Ebrahimi snickered at some of the lessons. “For example there’s a war and there’s no food and the people are getting angry. What should you say?” he recalled. “They suggested announcing falsely that there are 10 boats full of food coming. But I don’t think this would work. People are too sophisticated.”

Based on his lessons in North Korea, he was asked to design a course to train recruits in Iran. He authored course materials on subjects such as “psychological operations” or “propaganda and its role in foreign affairs,” copies of which he provided to the Times (at right).

His says trainees included other members of the Quds Force and Revolutionary Guards, as well as officers in the foreign affairs ministry and intelligence services.

Before he headed back to Tehran, he befriended Ali-Reza Asghari, a commander in the Revolutionary Guards, who by day tried to find components such as rocket fuses for weapons and by night eagerly took part in Beirut’s nightlife, despite the Islamic Republic’s puritanical image.

“There was a lot of womanizing and drinking” in Beirut, Ebrahimi said. “Not everyone. But a lot of us would.”

Asghari would later defect to the West, taking all his secrets with him.

TEHRAN, Iran (CNN) -- Iranian pro-government Basij militia members dispersed crowds of protesters in Tehran Thursday -- sometimes with force -- according to a journalist on the scene.

Protests by Iranians, such as this one on June 15, have been defended by the reformist figures.

The demonstration is taking place on the 10th anniversary of a student uprising that, at the time, posed the biggest threat to the Islamic regime since its inception in 1979.

The protesters are using the anniversary to resume demonstrations against the outcome of the June 12 presidential election.

An estimated 2,000 to 3,000 people crowded the streets and headed toward Tehran University, the site of the 1999 student uprising.

Several protesters were hit on the arms and backs by the Basij, the journalist reported. The militia tried to persuade one man, whose face was bleeding, to get into an ambulance, but he refused.

Some of the protesters shouted "Allah u Akbar," or "God is Great" and "Ya Hussein, Mir Hussein" referring to opposition candidate Mir Hossein Moussavi. Watch scenes of protesters and street clashes »

Earlier, the commander of Iran's security forces warned that police would "strongly confront" anyone planning to protest on the anniversary of a pivotal point in Iran's reformist movement.

In an interview with the state-run Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), Maj. Gen. Esmaeel Ahmadi Moghadam said authorities would confront protesters and that no demonstration permit had been issued for Thursday.

On July 9, 1999, known as the 18th of Tir in the Iranian calendar, 200 students protested the closing of a reformist newspaper, Salaam, which supported moderate President Mohammed Khatami. Hard-line activists entered dormitories in Tehran University, broke windows, set fires and attacked the students.

Tehran's governor, Morteza Tamaddon, issued a warning as the police chief, Maj. Seyed Hadi Hashemi, told IRNA that authorities are trying to encourage people to leave the capital before Thursday because of severe haze.

Hashemi "urged the citizens to consider Tehran's heavy pollution and travel outside of the capital for the weekend in order to help reduce traffic," IRNA reported.

Iranian-American journalist Jason Rezaian said Iranians were frightened after a brutal crackdown on those who protested the outcome of the June 12 presidential elections. Hardliner Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was declared the winner over reformist candidate Moussavi, his chief rival.

Moussavi's supporters took to the streets by the thousands in the aftermath of the vote until the protests turned bloody as security forces cracked down.

Buzz of protests Thursday swirled on social networking sites but Rezaian said it was difficult to predict how such a landmark day might unfold.

He said he had heard something "big" would take place but no one wanted to talk about it for fear of tipping off the security forces.

Six days of protests erupted. According to Human Rights Watch, more than 25,000 people eventually participated, making the demonstrations the biggest threat to the Islamic regime since its inception in 1979.

"Obviously, there has been a crackdown and people are scared, said Rezaian, who covered the June elections and reported from Tehran for about 12 days afterward. He was forced to leave because of restrictions placed on international media outlets.

He said he had been in Iran in previous years on July 9 and had seen firsthand that security was heightened for the anniversary. Iranians, he said, have a penchant for marking all sorts of anniversaries and this one, this year, could not be more relevant.

"There is no fathomable way that after everything we've seen in the last 30 days that they wouldn't take this opportunity," Rezaian said.

Ultimately, he said, "it's one more important day in a succession of important days."

Economic crisis is 'clear proof of effects of sin'

Pope Benedict today pinned responsibility for the worldwide recession squarely on greed and an amoral fascination with technological progress for its own sake.

This must be tackled, he said, by the creation of a global political authority and financial order based not just on the search for ever greater profits, but on ethics and a sense of the common good.

The pontiff made the appeal in a 144-page encyclical – a reflection on doctrine that is the highest form of papal writing – three days before he was due to discuss the global downturn with Barack Obama.

Caritas in Veritate (Charity in Truth) is Benedict's third encyclical and the first to deal exclusively with economic and social issues. In one section, he says the current economic crisis is "clear proof" of the "pernicious effects of sin".

The pope's analysis echoed some of the criticisms made by the archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, of government policies that target growth to the exclusion of wider social considerations. But, as its title suggests, the papal encyclical is a primarily theological discourse which takes as its point of departure the argument that only a belief in the truth as proclaimed by Christianity can offer the necessary answers.

"A Christianity of charity without truth would be more or less interchangeable with a pool of good sentiments," Benedict writes. His reflection – delayed by more than a year by the world economic crisis – nevertheless contains numerous specific criticisms and recommendations. Though the pontiff does not use the word "capitalism" in the encyclical, there are lengthy reflections on morality in economics.

In a key passage, the encyclical says: "The conviction that the economy must be autonomous, that it must be shielded from 'influences' of a moral character, has led man to abuse the economic process in a thoroughly destructive way. In the long term, these convictions have led to economic, social and political systems that trample upon personal and social freedom, and are therefore unable to deliver the justice that they promise."

Then in an unequivocal critique of unbridled markets, the pope writes that "grave imbalances are produced when economic action, conceived merely as an engine for wealth creation, is detached from political action, conceived as a means for pursuing justice through redistribution."

At a press conference in the Vatican, the pope's technical consultant, Stefano Zamagni, an economics professor at the University of Bologna, denied the encyclical was anti-capitalist, but added that it "views capitalism in its historical dimension and goes beyond it".

He noted that "the market economy is broader than just capitalism", which was merely one variant. In another section of the reflection, Benedict argues that "financiers must rediscover the genuinely ethical foundation of their activity … right intention, transparency, and the search for positive results are mutually compatible and must never be detached from one another."

Then, in a passage that builds on ideas first voiced by his predecessor, John Paul II, the pope argues that globalisation has made necessary a "reform of the United Nations Organisation and likewise of economic institutions and international finance so that the concept of the family of nations can acquire real teeth".

One of his most senior advisers, cardinal Renato Martino, said: "The encyclical is not asking for a super- or world government." But it comes very close to doing so. It proposes a "true world political authority" that "would need to be universally recognised and to be vested with the effective power to ensure security for all, regard for justice and respect for rights." It would be asked to "manage the global economy; to revive economies hit by the crisis [and] to avoid any deterioration of the present crisis."

But its responsibilities would be more than just economic. They would include securing "timely disarmament, food security and peace". The new body, a reformed UN, would also be called upon "to guarantee the protection of the environment and to regulate migration".

Often regarded as the first "green" pope, Benedict also took advantage of his encyclical to make clearer his ideas on the importance of respecting the environment. But Zamagni said the document implicitly rejected forms of environmental thinking that put other forms of creation on a par with humankind.

Obama Cannot Afford to Get Iran Wrong - Jul 08,2009

President Barack Obama has come under withering criticism from neoconservatives and liberal internationalists for not speaking out more quickly and forcefully in support of the pro-democracy demonstrators in Iran. But now that the initial crisis is past, and Teheran has settled in for a behind-the-scenes struggle among the Shiite clergy, it is apparent that Obama's instinct has been pitch-perfect. The last time an American president was criticized for not coming out forcefully enough in support of pro-democracy demonstrators was twenty years ago, when George H. W. Bush took a publicly reticent stance as the Soviet Empire collapsed in Eastern Europe and the Baltic states. In A World Transformed, the 1998 memoir he coauthored with his national security advisor Brent Scowcroft, one of the finest and under-rated of political memoirs written in recent decades, Bush recalled that he felt it important to “step carefully in Poland and Hungary and … avoid aggravating the Soviets, whose military presence still loomed there.” If the U.S. had taken overt action to encourage democracy, he explained, “I understood that the pressure on Gorbachev from hard-liners to intervene would grow...there could be more Tiananmens." In other words, he recognized that Ronald Reagan's aggressive policies had set history in Eastern Europe in motion, and that it was now his own task to slow it down – to allow liberal change to settle in with minimal bloodshed. Tiananmen was fresh in his memory—a bloody repression by another communist regime against its democratic opponents. His fear of instigating another such event governed his decisions in Europe.

Obama now faces a similar challenge.

History has been set in motion in Iran. Though only dozens have been killed so far, the possibility of hundreds or more dying in a bloody upheaval is not out of the question. One ayatollah has even called for executions. Obama's goal must be political change and liberation in Teheran with minimal bloodshed. And he simply cannot accomplish that by putting America's fingerprints all over the democracy movement there. How he handles this could mean the difference between a massive crackdown by a terror-promoting, radical regime (who would likely retain complete control for years to come), and a gradual behind-the-scenes transformation, as the clerisy moves delicately away from the "Death to America" mantra of previous decades. In that regard, like the elder Bush vis-à-vis Eastern Europe, the less Obama says about Iran these days the better. It's not about winning an argument, as some commentators appear to believe; it's about effecting change, indirectly, in a complex society half-a-world away.

The fact is that various scenarios are possible for Iran, and the United States must prepare for all of them by not rhetorically boxing itself in. It is very possible that the hardliners in Iran will win the immediate power struggle, and seek, months down the road, to engage the U.S. as a way to take some of the wind out of the sails of the democratic opposition. With a nuclear Iran a not-so-distant reality, America's national interest dictates that it set itself up properly for such a circumstance. If the democrats eventually win the power struggle, the U.S. will be in an optimum position in any case. It is the less-than-optimum scenario that the U.S. has to prepare for. Recall that the elder Bush's muted rhetoric did not harm the democracy movements in Eastern Europe one bit; in fact, it might have helped them, by reducing the threat of a Soviet military response.

Iran, because of its size, its well-educated population, its geographical logic - there is relatively little artificial about its frontiers - and its position straddling the oil-rich Caspian Sea and the oil-rich Persian Gulf, is the most powerful and influential nation in the Moslem world. It retains the ability to destabilize Iraq—and even a small shift in its foreign policy could promote stability in Lebanon or further Palestinian-Israeli peace talks. Obama cannot afford to get Iran wrong.

And he is not. His temperament can't be improved upon. In his Cairo speech, he talked in broad terms about liberal change in the Muslim world. That may have been a factor in the election in Lebanon in June, in which the pro-western anti-Hezbollah faction won. And who knows, it may also have helped spur the democracy demonstrations in Iran. But he has been careful not to insert himself into Iran’s domestic debate, except in the vaguest terms.

Iran will likely soon develop enough weapons-grade material to make a bomb, even as it may not eventually do so. Moreover, a few years hence, a nuclear Iran may be a very different ideological animal than the country we know today. Thus, the idea that the clock is ticking and someone - the U.S. or Israel - must bomb Iran now is simplistic. Vice President Joseph Biden’s remark over the weekend, on This Week With George Stephanopoulos, that Israel has Washington’s go-ahead to attack Iran was unwise and undisciplined. It is the only blemish in the Administration's performance thus far.

In a postscript to A World Transformed, Brent Scowcroft writes that he felt a sense of pride when the Soviet flag was lowered from the Kremlin one last time—pride in having helped the Soviet Union to reach a relatively peaceful dissolution, even as he admits that Mikhail Gorbachev deserved most of the credit. When it comes to Iran, at the rate Obama is going—treading carefully, helping liberal-minded Iranians where we can (in the shadows mostly), he may one day be able to feel a similar degree of accomplishment

The son of Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has taken control of the militia being used to crush the protest movement, according to a senior Iranian source. The source, a politician with strong connections to the security apparatus, said that the leading role being played by Mojtaba Khamenei had dismayed many of the country's senior clerics, conservative politicians and Revolutionary Guard generals. But these conservatives are reluctant to challenge the Khameneis openly out of fear that any conflict would destabilise the Islamic Republic and weaken Iran in the region. Instead they will use their positions in the organs of state to make it hard for the supreme leader and President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to govern. "This game has not finished. The game has only just started," the source said, on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of his own position in Iran.

He said Mojtaba had played a leading role in orchestrating Ahmadinejad's disputed election victory on 12 June and had led the backlash against protests through direct control of street militias, known as basiji.

The official death toll from that backlash is less than 20 but, according to a Tehran doctor who has given his account to the Guardian, the actual number is much higher – 38 in the first week at his hospital alone. He said the basiji covered up the deaths and pressured doctors not to talk.

"Mojtaba is the commander of this coup d'etat. The basiji are operating on Mojtaba's orders, but his name is always hidden in all of this. The government never mentions him," the Iranian politician said. "Everyone is angry about this. The maraji [Iran's most senior ayatollahs] and the clerics are angry, the conservatives are very angry and strongly critical of Mojtaba. This situation cannot continue with so many people on the top against it."

Very little is known about Mojtaba Khamenei. He is the supreme leader's second son, reportedly being groomed to succeed his father. Such a dynastic succession would be very hard under present circumstances as the leader is supposed to be chosen by a clerical assembly of experts on the basis of the candidate's religious standing. Mojtaba wears clerical robes but by no means has the theological status to rise to the top job. A major upheaval in the clerical establishment would be required to arrange it.

Within Iran, Mojtaba is widely believed to control huge financial assets. There are claims on Iranian dissident websites that the current anti-British campaign in Tehran is motivated in part by Britain's announcement on 18 June that it had frozen nearly £1bn in Iranian assets, in accordance with UN and EU sanctions. The frozen funds included a lot of Mojtaba's money, it is claimed.

Mojtaba's name does not appear on the Treasury's list of targets of those sanctions, but one British official said the supreme leader's son may operate through state-run enterprises that are listed. "I'd be amazed if some of the money wasn't his," the official said.

The Iranian politician who spoke to the Guardian said the supreme leader had long been leaking support among the religious hierarchy on which his powerbase was once built and had now virtually lost it altogether. Among the roughly 20 maraji ("sources of emulation", from whose ranks the supreme leader is supposed to be chosen), he said Khamenei could only rely on the support of a handful.

He said that an axis of lay conservatives in important positions would also try to hinder Ahmadinejad's efforts to wield power. That axis includes Ali Larijani, the parliamentary speaker, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, the Tehran mayor, and Mohsen Rezai, one of the defeated presidential candidates and the secretary of the expediency council, which mediates disputes between the clerical and lay state institutions. They would be supported by the opposition's most powerful backer behind the scenes, former president Hashemi Rafsanjani, head of the expediency council and the assembly of experts.

The Iranian source also claimed there were splits in another pillar of the Islamic Republic, the Revolutionary Guard. The overall commander, General Ali Jafari, and the Tehran province commander, General Ali Fazli, were opposed to Mojtaba's power grab.

He said the hardline statements issued in the Revolutionary Guard's name, threatening a "decisive confrontation" with protesters, were the work of the political and public relations departments, which are under the direct control of Ahmadinejad, and did not represent a united position. That is a controversial claim. Most analyses have presented the Revolutionary Guard as monolithic and entirely behind the regime.

For revolutionary stalwarts uneasy over the direction of the regime, open rebellion was unthinkable, the politician said. "For them, the red line is the stability of the country," he said. "They will continue softly."

He said this hidden internecine struggle would last a considerable period and the outcome was far from clear. The only certainty was that the Khameneis and Ahmadinejad had not yet won. "They control things on the surface," he said. "But Iranians are not sheep

Keep quiet under all circumstances, the circular advises those planning to march in Thursday's unauthorized demonstrations in Iran cities. "The heaviest weapon to carry is one rose in the hand," it says. As Iranians prepare for what could be another violent day of confrontations Thursday between demonstrators and security forces, including pro-government plainclothes Basiji militias, supporters of opposition candidate Mir-Hossein Mousavi have distributed instructions to try to keep any anticipated violence to a minimum. One video making its way around the Internet shows demonstrators how to make devices to disable the motorcycles used by truncheon-wielding Basiji and Ansar-e-Hezbollah militiamen. The marches, which are taking place amid continued political discord over the June 12 election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, are meant to mark the 10-year anniversary of the storming of Tehran University dormitories by pro-government militias and subsequent weeks of unrest.

The circular urges marchers to avoid wearing the green that has become the official color of the Mousavi campaign or "flashy make-up" in order to demonstrate the marchers' serious intent.

It suggests demonstrators leave cellphones and jewelry at home and carry only an identification card and relatives' phone numbers.

If protesters decide it's too risky to take part in the rally, the circular advises them to walk or drive around in their own neighborhoods, flashing the "victory" sign with their fingers.

"Bear in mind the most important point is to walk to the destination and not follow the exact path," the message advises. "Wherever you see the anti-riot police or militia ... hindering you ... change your path ... the goal is to keep on going."

£1,000 fines to bolster ID cards as Tories pledge to scrap scheme

MPs tonight approved fines of up to £1,000 for those who fail to tell the passport and identity service of changes in their personal details including address, name, nationality and gender.

The fines are part of a package of secondary legislation being pushed through parliament designed to implement the national identity card scheme, and which will allow sensitive personal data on the ID card/passport database to be shared with the police, security services and other government departments.

The regulations were approved as the Conservative party made clear for the first time their commitment to scrap not only the identity card scheme but also its underlying database.

The shadow home secretary, Chris Grayling, told MPs: "One of the first acts of a Conservative government will be cancelling the ID cards scheme. The scheme and the register are both an affront to British liberty and will have no place in a Conservative Britain. They are also a huge waste of money."

The home secretary, Alan Johnson, also made clear that there had been no U-turn over ID cards and that the programme was still on course despite claims that he had ruled out making them compulsory. "We haven't scrapped ID cards, what we are doing is accelerating their introduction," he told MPs. Johnson last week cancelled a compulsory trial due to start in September for 30,000 pilots and airport workers.

The Conservatives' home affairs spokesman, Damian Green, asked how the scheme could be "voluntary" when they were penalties for failing to provide information for the database: "If it is a voluntary card, why are there penalties attached for failing to provide that information?" he said, adding that the government should warn people that once they "volunteer" for a passport or ID card it was then compulsory for the rest of their lives.

Fines starting at £125 and rising to £1,000 are to be levied on those who fail to notify the authorities of a change of name or address, or to surrender an identity card, or to report a card lost, stolen, damaged, tampered with or destroyed.

The U.S. Geological Service issued a report in April ('08) that only scientists and oil men knew was coming, but man was it big. It was a revised report (hadn't been updated since '95) on how much oil was in this area of the western 2/3 of North Dakota; western South Dakota; and extreme eastern Montana ..... check THIS out:

The Bake is the largest domestic oil discovery since Alaska 's Purdah Bay, and has the potential to eliminate all American dependence on foreign oil. The Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimates it at 503 billion barrels.. Even if just 10% of the oil is recoverable... at $107 a barrel, we're looking at a resource base worth more than $5.3 trillion.

'When I first briefed legislators on this, you could practically see their jaws hit the floor. They had no idea..' says Terry Johnson, the Montana Legislature's financial analyst.

'This sizable find is now the highest-producing onshore oil field found in the past 56 years.' reports, The Pittsburgh Post Gazette. It's a formation known as the Williston Basin, but is more commonly referred to as the 'Bake.' And it stretches from Northern Montana, through North Dakota and into Canada . For years, U.S. oil exploration has been considered a dead end. Even the 'Big Oil' companies gave up searching for major oil wells decades ago. The scale of the investigation demonstrates US authorities' determination to clamp down on abuse of prescription drugs.

It will also add to theories of foul play among the singer's friends and family, many of whom have asserted that his demise could and should have been avoided.

Allan Parachini, a spokesman for the LA Superior Court, confirmed that Judge Charlaine Olmedo had granted his authorisation for the raids.

"Everything about them is sealed, but they do exist," Mr Parachini said of the search warrants.

In an unprecedented attempt to unravel Jackson's complicated history, the LAPD has teamed up with the city coroner and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

The case got underway on June 25 - "the day of Jackson's death, when officers removed prescription drugs from the performer's home.

It intensified four days later, when officers were seen leaving the scene with bags of purported evidence.

According to the Los Angeles Times, "numerous bottles of Diprivan, the powerful sedative, were discovered at the residence.

The newspaper was informed by an unnamed source: "Some of the bottles were full and others were empty.

"None had prescription labels, and investigators are trying to determine how Jackson got the drugs

We ought to pay close attention to what preoccupies our military. Strange Martial Law via Food Control: HR 2749

Not what the American people ordered – HR 2749, martial law and the enslavement of their farmers

HR 2749 is a strange bill in many ways. While the other “food safety” bills have been around since winter, allowing for much public discussion on the internet, HR 2749 has only suddenly appeared. It is a mutant conglomeration of the worst of the other bills, with the addition of one very original part – martial law.

When it was a draft, it was Waxman’s bill. But once given a number, it became Dingel’s who already had a “food safety” bill, HR 759. So Waxman got none and Dingel got two. (Was this because Waxman, being Jewish, was a hideous choice to introduce a bill with Codex in it – designed by the Nazi pharmaceutical companies that funded Hitler, provided the gas for the gas chambers, experimented on prisoners with vaccines – and is expected to kill millions?)

* HR 2749 would give FDA the power to order a quarantine of a geographic area, including “prohibiting or restricting the movement of food or of any vehicle being used or that has been used to transport or hold such food within the geographic area.”

[This - "that has been used to transport or hold such food" - would mean all cars that have ever brought groceries home or any pickup someone has eaten take-out in, so this means ALL TRANSPORTATION can be shut down under this. This is using food as a cover for martial law.]

Under this provision, farmers markets and local food sources could be shut down, even if they are not the source of the contamination. The agency can halt all movement of all food in a geographic area.

The bill is unusual, too, because slow as it was to appear. The little bugger of bill has made up for it since. It got a number on June 10, went to committee on June 17, passed instantly, and is headed for a vote on the floor of the House.

The first Patriot Act was passed using fear of terrorism. This Patriot Act is more coy, hiding under a cloak of “food safety” and but also using fear – fear of food contamination. Evidently, Americans are supposed to be so frightened by the slightest possibility of a terrorist or of E-coli, they would trade away all their precious, hard fought freedoms for the promise of safety. Or at least, that is what the trade-off has become. “Terrorism” and “contamination” are great bugaboos used to open doors to an end to the US Constitution. That is exactly what we are left with after those who wrote HR 2749 are done.

This redefining of reality is what seems to be underlying all the loss of freedom. Normal and free are disappearing into the maw of corporate definitions of reality. See this Yup Farming piece.

So, we begin with contaminated food from filthy corporate processors and concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs). And what do we end up with after that reality is ground up by corporate legal hands? Changes in the definition of risk so that natural things are treated as dangerous and toxic things are untouched, such that:

Healthy, normal farms are taken over by government as though they were run by criminals and contaminated corporate slaughterhouses are untouched;
The necessary freedom of individuals to live and grow food and be left alone are somehow suddenly destroyed, though they were never the source of any food contamination issue; and such that
The profit and control and power of corporations which were absolutely the source of the increasingly terrible food, is somehow suddenly vastly increased.

Thanks to corporate control over reality, our wanting to clean up corporate processors and feedlots and CAFOS and end up with farmers’ markets and local farms and organic food has become the industrialization and potential destruction of every healthy part of the food system and the triumph of the most contaminated and toxic part. And in the non-bargain, we lost all freedoms and they took all control. And “all” is not a hyperbole here, for one need only look at another provision of HR 2749 to feel how insane, how distant from all we ever wanted.

* HR 2749 would empower FDA to regulate how crops are raised and harvested. It puts the federal government right on the farm, dictating to our farmers.

[What is missing in pointing out this astounding control, is that it opens the door to CODEX and WTO "good farming practices" will include the elimination of organic farming by eliminating manure, mandating GMO animal feed, imposing animal drugs, and ordering applications of petrochemical fertilizers and pesticides. Farmers, thus, will be locked not only into the industrialization of once normal and organic farms but into the forced purchase of industry's products. They will be slaves on the land, doing the work they are ordered to do - against their own best wisdom - and paying out to industry against their will. There will be no way to be frugal, to grow one's own grain to feed the animals, to raise healthy animals without GMO grains or drugs, to work with nature at all. Grassfed cattle and poultry and hogs will be finished. So, it needs to be made clear where control will take us. When we wanted not to get E-coli in processed meat, did we intend to put our farmers into corporate servitude? Did we plan to have our own lives straight-jacketed by a million new controls over our own gardens, our own desire to grow food, our own plans to start small businesses, our own dreams to have a small piece of land and farm ourselves? Who has the audacity to take our needs and grotesquely bastardize them in these ways, while giving the destruction and totalitarian control the sham name of “food safety”?

We wanted good food. We never wanted to trap our farmers into an industrial prison on their own land, afraid moment to moment of not fulfilling some monstrous set of instructions that never end – rules the farmers loathe, rules that have not only nothing to do with real farming but which are antithetical to it. Why have we ended up with HR 2749, an intense corporate nightmare around the most central and necessary aspects of a free country and of free human beings – farming and food?

American farming needs to be relieved of the burdens it has been under, not finished off by its corporate competition. It needs freedom to flourish again. Obviously – and Congress people who would think to vote for such absurdities, take note – the imposition of surveillance, monitoring, warrantless entry, taking of all records, licensing, fees, Codex and NAIS, in addition to massive penalties and prison terms (all without judicial review over even appropriateness and validity), are not how one thanks American farmers for holding together the only working part of our food system. HR 2749 is the most vicious and insane bill one could imagine. Who treats our farmers in this way? Who believes that such police measures can provide for the rebirth of farming and the return of healthy food? Who wrote this bill that trashes the freedom of all our lives? HR 2749 was not what we ordered and it should be sent back the bowels of hell it came from.

HR 2749 is both insane and cruel. And the deceptiveness of hiding a Patriot Act in it and the brutal rush to slip it through Congress are ANTI-democratic.

The video gave substance to what seemed so far away. We saw the look in her eyes as they went lifeless. We heard the sounds of her friends and family as they begged her to hold on. And she became the personification of the struggle for democracy in a country where voices for freedom are quelled. Her name was Neda Agha-Soltan, and without Twitter we might never have known that she lived in Iran, that she dreamed of a free Iran, and that she died in a divided Iran for her dreams. Neda became the voice of a movement; Twitter became the megaphone. Twitter is a free social-messaging utility. It drove people around the world to pictures, videos, sound bites, and blogs in a true reality show of life, dreams, and death. Last month's marches for freedom and the violent crackdowns were not only documented but personalized into a story of mythic tragedy. When traditional journalists were forced to leave the country, Twitter became a window for the world to view hope, heroism, and horror. It became the assignment desk, the reporter, and the producer. And, because of this, Twitter and its creators are worthy of being considered for the Nobel Peace Prize.

I first mentioned this idea while being interviewed on a cable news program. Many scoffed. That's understandable. But think about what Twitter has accomplished: It has empowered people to attempt to resolve a domestic showdown with international implications – and has enabled the world to stand with them. It laid the foundation to pressure the world to denounce oppression in Iran.

Twitter has been criticized as a time-waster – a way for people to inform their friends about the minutiae of their lives, 140 characters at a time. But in the past month, 140 characters were enough to shine a light on Iranian oppression and elevate Twitter to the level of change agent. Even the government of Iran has been forced to utilize the very tool they attempted to squelch to try to hold on to power.

Without Twitter, the world might have known little more than a losing candidate accusing the powers that be of alleged fraud. Without Twitter, the people of Iran would not have felt empowered and confident to stand up for freedom and democracy. They did so because they knew the world was watching. With Twitter, they now shout hope with a passion and dedication that resonates not just with those on their street, but with millions across the globe.

Other social media have certainly played an important part in giving freedom a voice. Iranian presidential candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi has amassed more than 100,000 supporters on Facebook. At the height of the protest activities, according to Mashable.com's Ben Parr, more than 221,000 Iran tweets were sent in one hour. In one day, 3,000 Iranian videos were uploaded on YouTube, and 2.2 million blog entries were posted.

But Twitter's role has been unique. More so than other networks, it offers many more users the opportunity to communicate ideas, text, and media. On most other sites, only people who have accepted one another as "friends" are able to read updates. Via "hashtags" (for example, #iranelection), Twitter overcomes this barrier, allowing people interested in a particular subject to tweet and retweet messages. Additionally, through cellphone applications and SMS, Twitter proves easier to update – and harder for an oppressive regime to block – than other types of social media.

Although we don't know how the uprising in Iran will end, or where the symbols of freedom and liberty will again be given power by people who require an unfettered means of communicating with the rest of us, Twitter and other social media outlets have become the soft weapons of democracy. Twitter told us the story of Neda's supreme sacrifice. It is telling the story of the Iranian people yearning to breathe free. For those reasons, Twitter deserves consideration for the Nobel Peace Prize.

About forced vaccination in Sweden

Annika in Sweden has emailed saying Sweden has ordered 18 million vaccines, that is two doses per person. The Swedish authority that deals with disease control says on their website that in case of a pandemic there will be “cooperation” with the EU and WHO. I presented more evidence, arguments and facts concerning Baxter and the 72 kilos of live bird flu material, which was sent out to 16 laboratories from its facilities in Austria in February – material which was destined for vaccines in four countries: Slovenia, Czech Republic, Germany and Austria.

The original live bird flu virus came from WHO.

The Austrian Health Minister Alois Stöger confirmed that Baxter sent out 72 kilos in Parliamentary Answers dated May 20th, 2009.

He also revealed he had undertaken no steps to conduct a full in investigation into Baxter’s breach of biosafety level 3 regulations.

He claimed the 72 kilos of live bird flu material had been destroyed, but gave no details of that process; the suspicion has been raised the 72 kilos is still in circulation.

Under Austria’s Influenza Pandemic Plan of 2005, WHO and the EU are set to take charge of Austria via a special crisis management team (SKKM) to be set up in the Federal Ministery of Interior in the event of a “pandemic” emergency.

Innoculating the entire Austrian population with (Baxter) shots is a declared objective of the SKKM. The injections will contain a mix of “whole virus”, mercury and adjuvants – and so be very toxic.

Similar pandemic plans exist in countries all over Europe.

In some countries, such as France, the injections could be mandatory.

This week I will file a new set of criminal charges against the Health Minister, Alois Stöger, the Chancellor Werner Faymann, Dr Dagmar Belakowitsch-Jenewein and others for their role in the cover up of Baxter’s crime here in Austria.

Interestingly, Faymann was at the Bilderberg meeting in Athens this May. A member of Austrian Parliament tabled questions on 17th May concerning Faymann’s visit to the Bilderbergs, which the CEO of the vaccine company Novartis also attended.

Novartis seems to have been involved in the bird flu vaccine trials in Poland that killed at least 21 people in summer 2008.

There is also evidence that depopulation was discussed at the Bilderberg meeting in Athens. Furthermore, a Swedish politician is reported to have floated the idea that WHO should be transformed into a global health department.

The young male officer said, “Mam, I think that you have to file these charges in Federal Court.” I replied, “Yes, I probably do. But my interest is in protecting Volusia County right now. So I will file them here.”

An older officer who had been listening in stepped up and took what I had to say quite seriously. He told me that I should hear a reply from them within five days. I looked the young smirking officer in the face and said to him, “Laugh now, if you will, young man.”

“Will you be reading the charges?”, I asked him. When he told me that he would be reading them, I told him to write down some of the websites mentioned in the evidence and to go see for himself what is actually going on. He said that he would.”

Elizabeth also writes:

“I have heard that F.E.M.A. is planning nationwide terrorism drills in the United States. They are set to begin on July 27th. I can only pray that I might make it in time to offset this tyranny over my nation. I am well aware that the U.N. has almost total autonomic authority here, now, with the level 6 Pandemic Alert being called . We have more than one million foreign troops here ready to react upon their orders. How could the F.B.I. even overcome that?”

In the event of a pandemic, WHO will coordinate the activities of Homeland Security and FEMA from a special pandemic control room linked to supercomputers of the UN security forces.

This control room appears set to be the the nerve center for any operation to transport large numbers of Americans by rail or road to the FEMA camps or from special quarantine centers set up at 19 airports.

Any systematic and sustained disruption to the operation of the WHO pandemic control room, of Homeland Security and FEMA headquarters or of the logistics of its units, of railways or other transport infrastructure leading to FEMA camps would be a severe blow to any covert mission to mass murder Americans and leave the country to be occupied by foreign troops under the direction of WHO and the UN.

My chance to talk to US Marines last night

Last night, I had the honour of being on Drew Raines’ radio show together with Dr Rebecca Carley and Patrick Jordan.

It was a special moment for me to be able to talk to the military in the USA because my own Irish grandfather was an army officer, and very much revered by my mother as a person of towering integrity and courage. She never tired of telling me stories of how he did this and that. The result of his many activities, though, always seemed to be that people were happier! Whenever he could, he acted so as to ensure there was fairness, peace, health, happiness and also freedom in his part of his camp, the Curragh in Kildare, and in his community.

Perhaps that was because he was a happy person and knew how to enjoy life, music, reading and even writing poetry.

One of his poems was published in a book called “Highlights of the Donegal Highlands” – he was born in Donegal, on the west coast of Ireland.

One poem is called “Donegal” and here it is in full.

Where giant peaks on duty stand
To guard the jewels of the land;
the placid lake, the rugged vale
Where lives the sweet romantic tale.
The simple home, the winding path,
The fairy mound beside the rath,
The singing brook, the foaming fall,
The peerless gems of Donegal.

Mid purple slops that roll away
To meet the ever changing bay
The peasant finds a sheltered site
To shield his home of snowy white.
A font of native wit is he,
A knight of honest chivalry,
Who sings the legends that recall
The days of ancient Donegal.

On rolling moor where game abounds
The hare defies the fleetest hounds,
The pointer stiffens in his spring,
The sportsman stills a whirring wing.
Amid the stream the ripples trail
A vivid streak of fin and tail,

Though he bowed down before no one, and was also very critical of the Catholic church, he knelt down every night to say the prayer “The Our Father”.

He acknowledged only one supreme being, only one utlimate law – the universal law of God which says we should respect and care for all our fellow human beings – and be ready to protect and defend them if the need arises.

This is, I believe, the spirit in which the US Constitution and Declaration of Indepdence was written, too.

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

“That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.”

These documents show, faith in human beings, faith in the inherent greatness and potential of every single human being.

They also recognise the importance of the role of good government in providing a framework for the organisation of people’s lives so they have the chance to fulfil their unique potential as free people submitting to no disciple other than that the discipline of their own conscience and the law.

When the seven Sheriffs of Montana make a pledge to be Sheriffs of the Constitution as Drew Raines said on his show, and when Marines pledge to serve the Constitution, they are signing up to something much more than a political document of 1700s.

They are pledging themselves to a vision founded in a recognition of the greatness of every single human being that goes back to ancient Greece, and further even, to ancient Egypt, also governed by a Justice, as is shown symbolically by the way every soul was believed to be weighed in the scales of Justice by the goddess Ma’at to determine their fate when they died.

But just, honest and good governments can become corroded and corrupted over time by greed. This is what we are facing now around the world — governments so corrupted that they are truly “destructive” to their ends.

In the USA and in Europe and elsewhere, we are facing a resurrection of Nazi Totalitarianism, an ugly ideology of racism and brute force in which people are considered to be no more than cogs in a machine, slaves, who can be murdered on a whim in the search for ever more wealth and power.

The issue of the deliberate release of an artificial virus to trigger forced vaccination with toxic substances is yet another example of how far governments around the world have become captive to the interests of a small corporate criminal group, who recognise no law and no ethical standards, and who by their use of the mainstream media, which they control, hide from people their crimes and their totalitarian agenda.

We have the Right to “alter and abolish” such a government and institute a new one – and we must use that right today.

The necessity of being proactive when it comes to destroying a criminal and destructive totalitarian government is something that Claus von Stauffenberg recognised in 1944.

Though he had only one hand after being wounded, Stauffenberg attempted to assassinate the Nazi Leader Adolf Hitler using a briefcase bomb and then to return to Berlin to launch a coup using his position as chief of staff to the “Home Army.” He might even have succeeded if Hitler had been killed.

Interestingly enough, Stauffenberg also read and wrote poetry and knew how to enjoy life in the best sense of the word.

The US Constitution tells us we have duties before the law, but we also have duties to ourselves, to be our best and highest self, our happiest, noblest, most creative, talented selves, though for that we must accept the hard work that goes into making our character this way of our own free will.

WHY BAXTER SHIPPED LIVE BIRD FLUE AGAIN?

Major Outage at Seattle Data Center - Jul 06,2009

Multiple data centers at Seattle’s Fisher Plaza are offline after a fire in an electrical vault, which has left much of the complex without power and generator support. The largest impact has been extended downtime for the payment portal Authorize.net, which was offline for hours, leaving thousands of merchants unable to process credit card payments through their web sites. The downtime has also affected Microsoft’s Bing Travel service, Geocaching.com, domain registrar Dotster and web hosting provider AdHost, along with dozens of other sites.

UPDATE: Power was restored early Saturday morning, July 4, and tenants report that servers are coming back online. As of 10 a.m. Eastern Saturday, Geocaching and AdHostare are back online, but Bing Travel continues to display a message about the outage.

Authorize.net has since been able to restore its web site and most of its processing services through a backup data center. But with key electrical systems out of action for an indefinite period, building staff are turning to portable generators to provide an interim solution for tenants, who are being told that power may be restored sometime Friday evening.

“Fisher officials, CP Management and Egis Engineering have been coordinating with Seattle City Light to restore power to the building,” building owner Fisher Communications aid in a statement. “Fisher is bringing in electrical generators to restore power to the building, at which time it can further assess the situation. The company is working to restore normal service to its customers as soon as possible.”

Fisher said the electrical fire started at 11:10 p.m. Pacific time Thursday in a garage-level electrical room where Fisher Plaza East receives its power from Seattle City Light. “The cause of the electrical fire remains under investigation, and the sompany is working closely with Seattle City Light and outside experts to determine what caused this incident,” said Fisher.

An account on the NANOG mailing list reports that the incident triggered the sprinkler system in an electrical equipment room. As noted in the NANOG report, water damage could complicate recovery efforts

This is the second major outage at Fisher Plaza in the past year. Last June many sites at the building were offline after an electrical event at the building. Fisher Plaza previously had a major outage in 2006 (more details here on that incident). The owner of the building, which also houses the operations of Seattle TV and radio stations, has been attempting to sell Fisher Plaza.

Iran's Revolutionary Guard takes command

The top leaders of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guard publicly acknowledged they had taken over the nation's security and warned late Sunday that there was no middle ground in the ongoing dispute over the reelection of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in a threat against a reformist wave led by Mir-Hossein Mousavi. Maj. Gen. Mohammad Ali Jafari, commander of the elite military branch, said the Guard's takeover of the country had led to "a revival of the revolution and clarification of the value positions of the establishment at home and abroad." "These events put us in a new stage of the revolution and political struggles, and all of us must fully comprehend its dimensions," he said at a Sunday press conference, according to reports that surfaced today.

"Because the Revolutionary Guard was assigned the task of controlling the situation, [it] took the initiative to quell a spiraling unrest. This event pushed us into a new phase of the revolution and political struggles and we have to understand all its dimensions."

Meanwhile, their commander in chief, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, warned Western leaders against exploiting the country's political turmoil for their own ends.

"The Western governments should be careful about their hostile words and behavior because the Iranian nation will react," he told supporters on the occasion of the birthday of the Shiite saint Imam Ali. "We take into account the interfering words and behaviors of these governments and their attitudes will definitely affect the future of Islamic Republic of Iran's relations with them.'

His speech, broadcast on state television, followed Vice President Joe Biden's comments yesterday that the U.S. would not stop an Israeli attack on Iran's nuclear facilities.

"Even if the Islamic Republic leaders are at odds on certain affairs, they are united against the enemy as far as the safeguarding the country's independence is concerned," he said.

Many officials had said that the Revolutionary Guard had taken control of the nation's security in the wake of weeks of unrest that followed the June 12 vote, which opposition leaders claimed was stolen by Ahmadinejad, the incumbent.

Jafari's comments came the closest yet to publicly acknowledging what government supporters describe as a heroic intervention by the Revolutionary Guard and critics decry as a palace "coup d'etat" instigated by military elites loyal to Khamenei.

But instead of bowing to such pressure, opposition figures and protesters are preparing for massive nationwide rallies called for Thursday, the 10th anniversary of a 1999 attack by pro-government militiamen on the dormitories of Tehran University that led to weeks of political unrest.

The Basiji militia, which was formally placed under the command of the Revolutionary Guard earlier this year, is also said to be mobilizing to crack down on the demonstrators.

Over the weekend Grand Ayatollah Assadolah Bayat Zanjani launched a broadside against the mass arrest of reformist activists and protesters.

"Every healthy mind casts doubt on the way the election was held," said the ranking cleric, in a statement distributed online. "More regrettable are post-election large-scale arrests, newspaper censorship and website filtering and above all the martyrdom of our countrymen whom they describe as rioters."

The families of those detained spoke out harshly against the government. "My father is a defender of pure Islam, but you stick to your position," Mehdi Saharkhiz, the son of journalist Issa Saharkhiz, who remains in prison, wrote today, Father's Day in Iran, in a letter posted to various websites.

"My father has done his utmost to defend the republican nature of the regime," he wrote. "He wants to establish religious democracy, but you and your accomplices prefer your mundane interests to anything else."

The Revolutionary Guard is trying hard to stifle such criticism.

"Today, no one is impartial," Gen. Yadollah Javani said at the Sunday press conference, according to the Islamic Republic News Agency. "There are two currents -- those who defend and support the revolution and the establishment, and those who are trying to topple it."

The uniformed Revolutionary Guard leaders, joined by the turbaned cleric Ali Saedi, Khamenei's representative, said they would play a more active role in defending the Islamic Republic's core values. though this should not be interpreted as meddling in politics.

"The Revolutionary Guard is tasked with defending the revolution and it has to play a determining role in protecting and eternalizing the revolution," said Jafari, in comments posted to government websites. "Such an attitude does by no means mean interference with politics."

The Guard and its allies have rarely refrained from entering daily politics. As Mousavi's supporters described plans to create a new political party Sunday, an editorial in today's editions of Sobh Sadegh, a newspaper close to the Revolutionary Guard, argues that the powerful Guardian Council should bar "liars and rabble-rousers who were running for president" from taking part in electoral politics.

But Khamenei's speech contained some conciliatory gestures toward Mousavi supporters, who include reformist clergy and politicians. After his deputies for weeks equated peaceful demonstrators with rioters, Khamenei said foreigners had described Iranian people as rioters.

"Rioters were a minority who received budget allocated by some Western governments," he said. "It is natural that some Iranians feel depressed and sad due to the failure of their preferred candidate," he said. "The Islamic regime feels compelled to deal with those who threaten people and disturb their life and serenity. But the authorities should be careful to not mistake enemy for friend and consider friends as enemies just for a single error."

Islamist militants have been blamed for a bomb blast in the Philippines today which killed at least five people and wounded dozens more.
The bomb exploded outside the Immaculate Conception cathedral in Cotabato city, 545 miles (880 kilometers) south of Manila, as church-goers celebrated Mass.

A woman selling roast pork was killed on the spot while four others, including a soldier and three-year-old boy, died in a nearby hospital. Among the wounded were five soldiers who were passing the cathedral in an army van when the device, fashioned from a mortar round, exploded said army spokesman Colonel Jonathan Ponce.

"This is the handiwork of the rogue members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF)," Colonel Ponce told reporters, referring to the Muslim organisation which has waged a decades long battle for self rule in the southern island of Mindanao.

The improvised explosive was hidden near a row of food stalls selling roasted pig, said regional military commander Major General Cayton.

Witnesses said the bishop celebrating mass had just finished reading the gospel and was about to begin his homily when an explosion was heard.

"The explosion was so loud as if the cathedral was about to collapse," Merly Sandoval, a churchgoer, told a local radio station.

"It was like loud and frightening thunder. People inside the packed cathedral ran towards the altar. Outside, everybody was screaming, there was so much blood on the ground."...

Payrolls Fall More Than Forecast, Unemployment Rises - Jul 05,2009

Employers in the U.S. cut 467,000 jobs in June, the unemployment rate rose and hourly earnings stagnated, offering little evidence the Obama administration’s stimulus package is shoring up the labor market.

The payroll decline was more than forecast and followed a 322,000 drop in May, according to Labor Department figures released today in Washington. The jobless rate jumped to 9.5 percent, the highest since August 1983, from 9.4 percent.

We all know by now, how the latest Israeli attempt to bring a regime-change in Tehran has failed miserably – which was carried out through mass propaganda lies and publishing fake pictures of Iranian protestors including the one showing an Iranian girl making Zionist ‘finger-gesture’ to Dr. Ahmadinejad. However, most of us don’t know that since “moderate Islamist” Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan pulled Jewish terrorist Israeli president Shimon Peres’ skull-cap at World Economic Forum at Davos, by saying: “You are killing people. I know two former prime ministers in your country who said they felt very happy when they were able to enter Palestine on tanks…….” – Israeli Hasbara thugs are secretly busy to prepare the western public for a possible regime-change in Ankara.

On June 28, 2009 – Los Angeles Times publish Sebastian Rottela’s Hasbara piece “Turks increasingly turn to Islamic extremism”. According to this expert on ‘Al-Qaeda and Islamic extremism’ – the Qaeda leader Mustafa Abu Yazid’s recent audio message praising the Turkish suicide bombers killed near Afghan-Pakistan border, shows that “the changing composition of Islamic extremism. The number of Turks in Al-Qaeda long dominated by Arabs, has increased notably. And militant groups dominated by Turks and Central Asians, many of whom shate Turkic language, have emerged as allies of and alternatives to Al-Qaeda in northwestern Pakistan.”

Interestingly, Sebastian doesn’t mention Turks’ new Islamic extremism a threat to Israel, which has closer ties to Turkey in military, finance, trade and tourism than any of its neighbouring countries – but European countries like France, Germany, Belgium, and Netherlands with Turk population. According to the writer, the Turk population in Germany “that close to 3 million” – while a survey published by German Interior Ministry in June 2009 – estimates it to be 4 million with Turks (63.2%), Southeastern Europe (13.6%), the Middle East (8%), North Africa (7%) and the rest German converts.

Sebastian also blames Turk terrorism behind the Synogogue bombing, which Turkish government insisted to be work of foreign terrorism. Both CNN and FoxNews blamed Al-Qaeda for that. However, a Jewish investigating reporter, Margalit Cohen, wrote that it was the work of Israeli MOSSAD.

Sebastian’s ‘Islamic extremism’ theory is based mainly on the utterance of no other than Turkish ‘Islamophobe’, Zeyno Baran (b. 1972), who is a senior fellow at the Washington-based pro-Israel thinks tank, Hudson Institute, founded by Herman Kahn (d. 1983) and some of his Jewish colleagues at RAND Corporation in 1961. It’s trustees include Henry Kissinger, John Walters (former Drug Czar), Richard Perle, Douglas Feith, Alexander Haig, Conrad Black, etc.

Sebastian, however, conveniently, ignore the fact that it was Israeli terrorist organization (MOSSAD) which plotted the 2008 failed coup against Turkish government. Its ring-leader, Rabbi Tuncay Guney, who was allowed to escaped to the US – is now acting as a Rabbi at a Mississauga Synagogue in Canada.

In early 1940s – Jewish agencies in the West were using their influence over the US, Britain, and Canada not to allow Jewish immigration from countries occupied by Germany. They have invaded our living space, and in shops they look like white mushrooms of 25-30cm mounted on the fluorescent light fixings . . . they are UMTS 3G relay antennas.
And there are others even smaller, of 15-20mm, used for wireless transmissions (Wi-fi).

Relay antennas like this can be seen in the Stockholm underground system and in large shopping centres.

In some parts of Stockholm, for instance in the Hamngatan shopping centre, radiation levels of 200,000 µW/m²
(or 8.6 V/m) have been measured. This intensity of artificial HF microwave radiation is 2000 times higher than
the level recommended by the BioInitiative scientific group for inside buildings, which is 0.194 V/m (100 µW/m²).

After a brief search in the huge Gekas shopping centre in Ullared, 6-8 relay antenna emplacements were found. As if that wasn't enough, there are more relay antennas actually in the shops! The US Embassy said that Israeli law requires that inmates who refuse to sign a deportation must be kept in jail for 3 days before they are sent away. Judging by the booming numbers attending parties such as tonight's - Killing Kittens alone boasts 6,500 members, 70 per cent of whom are women - we are witnessing something of a sexual revolution.

Paloma lives in the basement of a tall, regal-looking building on a smart street in west London. Hers is a spacious studio flat with a neat patio area, just big enough for a potted herb garden and wrought-iron table with matching chairs.

Inside, the living quarters feature buffed wooden floorboards and neutral walls; there are rows of reference books, Penguin Classics, National Geographic and Vogue. Below these, taking centre stage on the mantelpiece, is a framed graduation photograph. It's nothing extraordinary, just a typical post-ceremony portrait of a slightly startled looking twentysomething with a fixed grin, clutching a rolled certificate. But in its present context, the image of Paloma with chestnut ringlets spilling erratically from under a mortarboard is somewhat incongruous.

For today – some five years later – almost directly below where the photo stands, the former Economic History student is squatting in the middle of her living room carpet, rummaging through a suitcase stuffed with lace garters, feathered face masks and beaded nipple tassels. Paloma pulls out a silver sequin suspender belt which she hoiks over faded denim jeans: "What do you think?" she teases, giving a flamboyant twirl. Her friend Camilla, a long, sinewy creature who is curled up on the sofa, looks up briefly: "I think you'll be the belle of the ball, babe," she purrs, before returning her attention to painting her fingernails.

Moments later, the doorbell rings. "That'll be the girls!" shouts Paloma, as she skips off down the hallway before returning with Claire, a smartly dressed brunette, and Bianca, an elfin figure with long auburn hair. "Sorry we're late!" they coo, offloading a bottle of rosé and a bag of deli snacks in the kitchen.

"There was an absolute disaster in the office last night!" Claire announces: "So I didn't get home until the early hours and had absolutely no time to think about what to wear!" Bianca smiles. "I wouldn't worry about that babe," she replies with a wink. "You're new to this, but I can tell you that if past experience is anything to go by, it won't be long until it all comes off again!" The women break into giggles and Claire gives a conciliatory shrug: "Better have a glass of wine in that case," she grins, and heads off in search of a corkscrew.

Tonight, it transpires, is something of an initiation for Claire, who, at 32, is the oldest of the four. For the first time, she will join the rest of her friends at what has become one of the most important nights in their social diary: a Killing Kittens party, an unusual private-members' event where, in the words of its organisers, "the sole aim is the pursuit of female sexual pleasure". According to Paloma, who is something of an old-timer (this will be her fifth party), if the event is a success, after an hour or two of cocktails and outrageous flirting, the gathering will turn into an orgy.

It won't take long to find out. But before we do, there is some serious preening, plucking and wine-drinking to be done, and while the girls prepare excitedly for the night ahead, they are eager to explain why attractive young career women such as themselves choose to spend their Saturday nights seeking out no-holds-barred group sex. "I know that for some people the idea is hard to grasp," Paloma begins. "But for me it makes perfect sense."

At 28, Paloma has a successful career in the City, which often keeps her at her desk from 7am until 11pm; the toll on her social life can be heavy and means she has limited time to dedicate to forging a meaningful relationship. But not having a boyfriend, she insists, shouldn't mean having to forfeit her sex life: "I've always had a strong libido," she says, "and with a high-powered job to contend with, I find sex is an amazing way to unwind."

Not that she isn't interested in finding a partner in the long term. On the contrary. Getting married and having children is a priority. Paloma's own parents have been married for 29 years, and the secret of their relationship, she says, is that they both waited until they found the right person. "Many women get involved in unsatisfactory relationships just because they believe that any companionship is better than none. But that is not what I want for myself. I want to wait until I meet the right man, and when I do, I'll concentrate my efforts on making our relationship last." Until then, she says, she will continue to ensure that she still gets her thrills, whenever and however she wants. And it seems she's not alone.

According to the Adult Industry Trade Association, a record number of sex toys were sold in the UK last year – the majority to young women. Of the £100m-worth of toys bought, the biggest grossers – by a long stretch – at outlets such as Ann Summers, Love Honey, Myla and sextoys.co.uk, were hand-held vibrators, designed for women to use on their own, or with their partner. Whereas a few years ago, the mere mention of a Rampant Rabbit would elicit uncomfortable squeals, today high-end vibrators – some made of gold and costing hundreds of pounds – are treated as ornamental treasures to be displayed and celebrated, not hidden away in a drawer.

One wonders what the physician who invented the "manipulator" in 1870 – a steam-powered dildo used by doctors to relieve symptoms of "hysteria" in women – would make of this trend. "I'd love to see his face," says Paloma. "If only he'd known what he was starting!" On a more serious note, Paloma says that the widespread availability and popularity of vibrators has helped to normalise discussions about the female libido. This, she believes, is very empowering. "Like when Kate Moss was spotted buying a vibrator in New York. It's only a small thing really, but it helps show men and women that it's OK to take charge of your sex life, and that helps other women realise they are normal for having a healthy sex drive."

Two bottles and much preening later, the now somewhat inebriated gaggle arrives at the allotted venue for tonight's party, a discreet private mansion in central London. It is 10pm and outside there is little sign of life, but behind an imposing front door, some 200 revellers are getting into the spirit of the occasion. Once inside, it becomes clear why the girls feel so at home here. Like them, 70 per cent of the clientele are female, well-educated and conventionally good looking.

The few men in attendance shuffle about, forming feeble packs – safety in numbers, one imagines, for this is a place where they constitute the submissive gender, and they know it. Men can't even attend these events without a female chaperone, and once there, they are forbidden from making any kind of advance. So until they get an invite to "come and play" from a "kitten", they have to stand on the sidelines and watch the action unfolding.

We arrive to a surprisingly tame scene. Downstairs, the champagne flows freely while revellers exchange polite, even wary, niceties. Some of the groups, quite clearly new to this, seem unwilling to commit to a conversation with their new acquaintances in case they are, according to some private code, verbally contracting themselves to the other group. But it appears they needn't have worried – for when the party gets going, it becomes a free-for-all. It takes a while to find this out, however.

For the first hour or two, you might even forget the reason why you're here. Apart from a couple of topless young women, who could be escapees from a frisky college party, the vibe is low-key – a bit of dancing, a little flirtatious banter, but not much more. And then, like something from a vampire movie, at 1am almost to the second, this subdued affair transforms surprisingly quickly into a full-blown orgy.

By the time I return to the main upstairs salon – in which a huge pile of adjoining mattresses, overlooked by a floor-to-ceiling mirror, is placed tellingly in the middle of the room – the walls are lined with couples and huddles of women, all looking on eagerly as some 20 bodies (male and female) get to it. There are threesomes, foursomes and indecipherable groupings in the throes of various intimate acts, some having full-blown sex, either oblivious to or spurred on by their audience. Sometimes it's hard to tell where one group stops and the next begins. More and more of those on the sidelines begin to slide into the pile, without any obvious invitation, and no one seems willing to turn down anyone who wants to get involved. (It's hard to tell how widely condoms are being used, but I did notice a basket of them by the front door.)

As I make my escape, I catch a conversation by the ground-floor stairway: a naked woman, recently returned from the bedroom, addresses an apprehensive-looking friend: "Why don't you just come upstairs?" she asks her reassuringly. "If you feel like getting involved, that's great, but if you don't, that's cool too." The pair join hands and move towards the stairs.

I later tell Paloma that the whole affair has left me feeling a little unsettled. But it shouldn't, she insists: "Whether or not you personally agree with what happened is sort of by-the-by. The point is that we acknowledge that a lot of women have the same desires as men and should have the chance to explore them."

It is the acceptance that women have needs and desires that lies at the heart of what Paloma insists is a new sexual outlook. If we continue to be shocked by women going to sex parties, or using vibrators, then we are doing the female population a disservice. "This is supposed to be a progressive, liberated society," she argues. "And yet some people still insist on making women feel like social pariahs if they admit to enjoying an orgasm. I think it's about time we faced up to the fact that some women just enjoy sex. Is that really so hard to believe?"
