Hurricane Ike: Death and Destruction from Deforestation - 10 AM EST on BTR

Today, we will take callers from Haiti who are reporting on the devastation caused by Hurricane Ike and what it's like to be in remote areas of the country, cut off by washed out bridges and flooded roadways.

Food, and fuel, are scarce. But, the spirit of the people continues to emerge from the despair. There is hope for the future, if people will listen to the message: reforest Haiti NOW!

The callers are involved with various ecological organizations that are part of the Operation Green Leaves Community Partners Program. Check out www.oglhaiti.com for more information, or, www.oglhaiti.wordpress.com.

The show, expanded to 90 minutes - 10 AM to 11:30 AM EST - is produced in Miami by Ken English, the BlogTalkRadioGuy, for Operation Green Leaves and the Social Radio Network.

  • Date / Time:

Voices from Haiti: What Happens Now? Tune in Saturday @ 10 AM to EcoAlert with Nadine Patrice

The show on  Saturday, 13 September 2008, is dedicated to all the hurricane victims of Haiti.

As you know, a series of tropical storms and hurricanes have crippled the country of Haiti, isolating villages and towns by flooding low land and washing away bridges. Electricity is non-existant in most parts of the country. Fuel and food are scarce.

With hundreds of corpses, mostly children, being piled in makeshift morgues, the spirit of the people is being tested. Hear from some of the people who were there when Ike came out of the darkness and laid waste to so much.

We will discuss short-term needs and some possible solutions to the problem of flash floods and erosion, which include planting trees on the barren mountains that rise from the coastal plain.

    Participating in the call:

Jane Wynne, director of the Wynne Farm Ecological Preserve in Kenscott, Haiti; Jean Vilmond Hilaire Ph.d, executive director, Societe Audubon Haiti - www.audubonhaiti.org; Bobby Chauvet, Federation of Friends of Nature (Federation des amis de la nature); Mr Cantave, Fondation Seguin - www.fondationseguin.org.

There are a couple of other people who will try to call, but phone service from Haiti is inconsistent, so we really won't know who calls in until they actually do.

We will update this report later this evening.

Check out www.oglhait.wordpress.com and www.oglhaiti.com for more information.

The show is produced by Ken English, the BlogTalkRadioGuy, for the Social Radio Network.
