15 Minute Craft Website Tips

My name is Nicolette Tallmadge, I currently run my own hand crafted jewelry design business. I’ve been designing and selling jewelry for over 11 years. I got the idea about The Crafted Webmaster when I was working as a full time and freelance web designer. I created my first site in 1996 by learning HTML in a magazine and used that experience to get a job designing web sites for a living. While designing sites full time and on a freelance basis, I was also designing and selling my own handmade jewelry and used my web experience to promote myself online. During that time I helped many of my fellow artisans with setting up their own web sites and with advice on how to promote their business on the web. I now run my jewelry business full time and I’ve built The Crafted Webmaster so I can provide information to other fellow artists and craftsmen so they can learn how to promote their work on the Internet.

How to Name Your Business: 15 Minute Craft Business Tips Show Notes

If you're just starting out with your own craft business, one of the things you'll need to think about is a name. Here's a couple of tips on how to think of a killer name for your art or craft business. Here’s a couple of tips:

    • Your business name should reflect the personality of your company and your work.
    • Avoid generic or cliché names.
      • Generic names have no personality, the world doesn't need another craft business named Jane Doe's Country Crafts.
    • Using your name or your name + designs works especially if you have a signature style or product.
      • Be aware if you use this option, your company identity is linked to your personal identity.
    • Unless it describes your product, try to avoid regional names or names based on your location such as street addresses.
      • If you’re known as "Florida Craftsman Woodworks" what happens if you happen to move to North Dakota?
      • If you are selling work in which the location is a large part of the style or backstory then referencing the location in the name is a great idea.
    • Make sure it’s something that people can pronounce and spell.
    • Use fun or edgy names only if it reflects your business personality and it won’t offend potential customers.
      • Jennifer Perkins's business name, "The Naughty Secretary Club" is a great name. It’s fun, and reflects the personality of the business.
      • But a fun, edgy name won’t make sense if you sell art that’s more traditional or appeals to a traditional audience.
    • Be careful with obscure names or names based on other languages.
    • Try not to name yourself in a corner.
      • If you name your business Katherine’s Bead Corner, what happens when you expand into decorative objects?
      • The Naughty Secretary Club is a great example, she sells both jewelry and home décor and the name still makes sense.
    • Make sure the domain name is available.
      • Go to My Namespot Domains and see if your company name is available. And while you’re there grab your own personal name as well.
      • Be cautious with domain names that contain numbers or singular or plural nouns. To avoid confusion, register the number spelled out and the singular and plural version of your name.
    • Be sure to register your name.
      • You can register a fictitious name at the city or county level…in some cases you’ll need to register at the state level.
      • If you want to register your name as a trademark you’ll need to make sure that no one else is using that name.
      • Check with the U.S. Patents and Trademark Office for more info.
    • Don’t be scared to change your name.
      • If your current name isn’t working for you change it!
      • Make your name change into an event.

On the next show... I’ll be talking about traveling for craft shows and how to make the journey a bit safer, cheaper, and less frustrating. We are in the midst of craft show season, and we still have until Christmas to go. And more than likely you’ll have to travel some distance in order to get where you need to go. Learn how to be prepared.

5 Mistakes Artists Make With Their Websites: Show Notes

If you're an artist with their own website, you'll want to make sure that you don't make these 5 mistakes.

Mistake #1- Not having a web presence

    • Your customers, both current and future are on the web, you also need to be
    • A web presence doesn’t have to be fancy, a blog on Blogger or Wordpress will do just fine and they are both free!
    • Don't get sucked into these common excuses...
      • I don't have time
      • People are going to steal my designs
      • I don't need one more thing to do
    • Bottom line, you're only hurting yourself but not getting a presence on the web.

Mistake #2- Not having a domain name

    • Your domain name is your personal or business identity on the web, no one is going to remember you at janesceramiccreations.bravenet.com
    • Domain names are cheap, they're only about around $8 or $9 a year at MyNameSpot Domains
    • A lot of the good domain names are already taken and the ones that aren't are going fast. Don't wait until you're building a website. Go to MyNamespot Domains and register your personal name and your company name.

Mistake #3 – Having a bad web presence

    • A bad web presence is better than having none at all...but just barely
    • What’s a bad web presence?
      • A poorly designed site.
      • A site that’s not updated.
      • A site that’s missing critical information.
      • A site that’s just plain ugly.
      • A site that overpowers the art.
    • If you can’t design a site, hire someone to do it for you. Visit How to Hire the Greatest Web Designer and learn how.

Mistake #4- Not optimizing for SEO

    • SEO= Search Engine Optimization.
    • People find what they want by using Google, Yahoo, and MSN, make it so they can find you first.
    • SEO is not complicated, you can do it yourself.
    • Learn more about SEO for your art website by download a free replay of "How to Build Traffic to Your Art Website: SEO Secrets Revealed". The audio is free only for the next couple days so hurry!

Mistake #5- Not using the power of multimedia

    • Art and craft are great for video
    • Video can be profitable. Woodturner Keith Burtis raised funds for a new lathe by vidcasting himself in his studio turning wood all weekend. Visit Keith Burtis at his blog and watch a replay of his Woodturner’s Weekend video.
    • Don’t know how to get started in video? Sign up for the free Crafted Webmaster newsletter, next week I’ll be starting a series on how artists can start using video on the web.

On the next show... I will be talking about preparing your website for the holidays. Christmas is just around the corner! My local Michaels as already started putting out Halloween stuff, so the Christmas stuff is not to far behind. I’m going to tell you how to get a head start on a great holiday season.
