As far as mental slavery is concerned, some black Americans deliberately choose to remain ignorant and uneducated. The fact that a black child in America will get teased and accused of "acting white" by his black peers for getting good grades and being academically oriented (as opposed to sports or rapping) shows that slavery is very much still alive in the minds of most black Americans.

Chattel slavery may have been abolished in the United States by the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, but it is still a valid means of punishment for crimes where a person has been duly convicted. Anyone incarcerated in a state or federal prison is a slave to the state or federal government.
