Tropicool Art & Entertainment

Miami Beach, like beauty, is the in eye of the beholder. Some see hotels, resorts and beaches, while others see restaurants and nightclubs. Some dive below the surface of the ocean, while others seek art, dance and opera. If there is an art to tourism, then Miami Beach is the curator. Remix and evolve. Take a walk on the artistic side - galleries and gallery walks, classical music, modern dance, exciting entertainment. From the Miami Design and Wynwood Art Districts to the "on the edge-of-the-ocean" vibe of South Beach, Miami Beach moves to a tropicool rhythm of its own.

    Date / Time:

    Miami Art & Entertainment

Today's show initiated a classical music element that is part of the Miami arts and entertainment element.

The first half of the show focused on the innovative 'art in public places' project of ECOMB, the Environmental Coalition of Miami Beach. Called the 'Eco-Art Gallery by the Sea' this project is a private sector initiative to raise funds, and awareness, for keeping Miami Beach clean. There will be 204 exhibits on the sand from South Beach to North Beach. Each art exhibit is actually a functioning trash can. So, the idea is that people on the beach will notice the trash cans because of the art, and then, hopefully, use them.

Melissa Markowitz - www.melissamarkowitz.net - a Miami artist whose work will be on display in May at Albertini Fine Arts in the Wynwood Art District of Miami called in to talk about her art. Check out www.albertiniarts.com for more information.

The second portion of the show featured an interview with steel pan player Kelly Assam who is performing on April 25th with the Coral Gables Opera - www.coralgablesopera.com - during their American Ideal IV at the Granada Presbyterian Church. The performance will be recorded by WLRN - channel 17 for broadcast on the PBS network during the summer.

Today's show will include a segment on the Coral Gables Opera - www.coralgablesopera.com. On Friday, April 25th, the non-profit organization with stage American Ideal IV at 10 AM in the Granada Presbyterian Church in Coral Gables, FL. The concert is free because it is being taped by WLRN - Channel 17 for broadcast during the summer.

In addition, I'll be talking about the new Eco-Art Gallery on Miami Beach which had its debut during an Earthday event on April 22 at the Sagamore hotel. The Eco-Art Gallery is an open-air display of 204 pieces of art, each wrapped around a trash can that is placed on the sand. More than 60 artists have submitted designs. You'll hear from Jacklyn Laflamme about her art, and her desire to find a sponsor so that her design can be on a can.

Miami Art Online is part of the BlueGreen Network, along with other BlogTalkRadio programs such as Caribbean Perspective with Eddie Fredericks - Monday @ 10 AM; Pocono Preview - Tuesday at Noon; and Liquid Lounge - Wednesday at 1 PM.

Beginning in May, all of the shows will be scheduled for 1 PM.

Miami Art Online: From Gallery Walk to Ocean Fest

It was a full show today. Ganas calle in. I met him on April 12 at Albertini Fine Arts in Wynwood. Ganas had just finished his idea of 'street art.' He had painted the image of two women while standing on the side of NW 36 street in front of the gallery. A self-taught artist who is included in a new book profiling Los Angeles graffiti arts, Ganas now blends his paints in public. Check out www.AlbertiniArts.com for more information.

Other artists who made a cameo appearance during the show include Jude Papaloko, Steve Martin, Bruce Lurie and Niels Johansen.

In May, I am planning to take the show on the road. First stop looks like I'll be 'grazin' in the Grass in the Miami Design District. Check out www.grasslounge.com for information about this restaurant and lounge in the Miami Design District.

  • Original Air Date:

    Miami Art & Entertainment

An internet radio program focused on the art galleries in the the Miami Design District, Wynwood and Miami Beach, and the artists whose work is displayed. Entertainment is focused on classical and electronic music.

  • Date / Time:

Miami Art Online: Thursday from Noon to 1 PM

I've decided to move the show around a little. The flexibilty of internet radio allows of frequent changes of days and times, since the show is recorded and archived.

In May, I'm planning to do the show from a restaurant in the Miami Design District called Grass. I might even do a show during Gallery Walk.

This week, however, I plan to include several 'podcast' interviews I did on April 12th. That was a busy night. In addition to making a stop at Art Fusion, the Steve Martin Gallery and Lurie Fine Art, I was at Jakmel Art Gallery in Wynwood for a special appearance of four members of the Coral Gables Opera.

Now that I think about it, that was a surreal experience. The gallery is in a large rectangular building. The intimate art area is where the opera people performed. The large hall, on the otherside of a rather flimsey wall, was filled with a hip/hop and rock band. Interestingly enough, several members of the rock band hung out in the opera area when the band was on break.

Coral Gables Opera, by the way, has a free concert at 10 AM on Friday, April 25th at the Coral Gables Presbyterian Church. The performance, called the American Ideal, will be taped by WLRN channel 17 for play during the summer. Check out www.coralgablesopera.com for more information.
