On this beautiful Sunday morning, the show opened with news from Jasmine. Dallas Weekly Managing Editor Gordon Jackson and student Tyree Washington joined the Roundtable. Andrew Whigham and Bilal were not in. I noted that the murderer of Brandon Ratcliff was given 99 years last week. Brandon's mom, Margie, worked with me over 25 years ago. Eric Brown and Renee Cottrell-Brown, formerly of the Pro-Line Corporation, joined me on the show to talk about the acquisition of Johnson Products Company. They plan to bring the sales team to Dallas and they will be looking at keeping alive the rich legacy of JPC, now that it is back to being a black-owned company. The Browns talked about work ethic and building relationships in the communities you hope to serve.
Gary Edwards was part of the 1988 Carter High School football team when he and others began robbing businesses. That team was one of the best ever and several members ended up in prison. Mr. Edwards wrote a book that he hopes will help young people to avoid the trappings that can land them in jail. His book is available at Jokaes or at www.carterboyz.com.
The dynamic Paul Coates will be speaking at the Third Eye's 23rd annual Spring Rising Lecture Series at the South Dallas Cultural Center at 6p.m. He talked about male bonding and the need for men to not focus on the circumstances that resulted in them having children. Instead they must focus on being a parent to the children. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at Jokae's African American Books, Pan African Connection Bookstore and Resource Center and The Dock Bookstore, or by calling 214-426-1683. Shoutouts were given to: --Angela Martin, visiting from NBC in Las Vegas, who visited the Urban Journalism Workshop in Dallas, along with Angelique Tege, Ester Davis, Bill Coleman from HBCU Today, Miss Community (dianne gibson), Janeane Anderson and Shana Johnson from Rep. Barbara Mallory Caraway's office. Eva Coleman directed the program. Angela is a graduate of the workshop and she also donated money to pay for lunch. --Roland Martin who is doing his thing on CNN --Mrs. Allison (Thelma Youngblood's mom) who turned 90 today!
--Condolences to the family of Robert Guice, services were yesterday.
I announced that I will be broadcasting live from South Dallas Cafe next week with City Council candidates so folks should come by and get the Chicken and Waffles Special. It's also time to get ready for the Don't Believe the Hype Celebrity Bowl-a-thon on June 27.
Also, it's not too late to rsvp for the screening of American Violet at AMC NorthPark on April 13 at 7p.m. Call 888-246-7164 x 705 or email AVDALLAS@bazanpr.com
And remember, Speak Out with Maryellen Hicks comes on immediately following me. So, wherever you do, whoever you talk to and whatever you do, Don't Believe the Hype.
