    The Best of Omar Chandler

    There is no more powerful and emotive instrument than the human voice. And Omar Chandler, with self-assured strength, style and class, knows how to open up his pipes and perform in front of a microphone. Indeed, the urbane, self-effacing New York - bred singer’s live performance showcases one of the most impressive voices in music today, to an audience hungry for something truly special. The Harlem-born Chandler has been singing all his life performing in venues throughout the New York area. But it was through his job driving a taxi that the fledgling singer met a then unknown Teddy Riley. It was during that association, on Christmas Eve, 1983 that Chandler and Riley captured first prize in the Apollo Theater’s legendary Amateur Night, winning a standing ovation from the notoriously tough Apollo audience. The Apollo victory led to a series of prestigious New York bookings that helped spread Omar’s reputation as an electrifying live performer. In 1987, Chandler returned to the legendary theater to perform on the first season of the television show “It’s ShowTime At The Apollo” and tied for first place with future recording star David Peaston. Chandler enjoyed his first label success with his featured appearance on Rob Base’s rap smash, “Joy & Pain” (with a subsequent tour with Base), and his vocal work on both Shelly Thunder’s reggae-rap hit “Working Girl” and Motown artist Rich Nice’s “The Rhythm.” Chandler’s first self-titled LP was released on MCA records in 1991. That album included his self-penned “Better World”, the UK r&b/soul smash “You Changed Me For The Better” and his cover of the Brainstorm song “This Must Be Heaven” which was produced by Keith Sweat. With his highly expressive and soul stirring style, Omar soon captivated a core audience of UK fans and had the number one album on the UK soul album charts. After touring the UK Chandler moved to Virginia to work with Teddy Riley. While in VA Chandler sang background on Bobby Brown’s album “Bobby”
