    Of Books and Other Things

    Wednesday, January 28, 2009

Another sunny day in Los Angeles, another broadcast of the Empty Nesters Show where we explore the journey that is life. Today we were joined by Kelly Corrigan, author of the New York Times best seller The Middle Place. Kelly's memoir was profiled in the January issue of O, the Oprah Magazine. You may have seen Kelly reading her essay "Transcending: Words on Women and Strength" on You Tube.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_4qwVLqt9Q
Her moving tome is about the time in life where one is caught between childhood and adulthood, still needing the sense of support from parents, while taking responsibility for children of one's own.
Kelly has been a book group favorite. Our own book group has been together for nearly ten years. Today we recommended the book The Double Bind by Chris Bohjalian paired with the American classic,
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. We've been busy at the movies recently viewing Defiance, Waltz with Bashir and Rachel Getting Married. All recommended for our audience, but maybe it's time for some lighter fare like the upcoming He's Just Not That Into You. Super Bowl Sunday is just a few days away. Neither of us has a team in the game, but the halftime entertainment, Mr. Springsteen, The Boss himself, is reason to watch. We pondered over how the highly anticipated commercials will play out in the current economic climate.
Exciting guests coming up in February to coincide with Heart Month- a world class cardiologist from Cedars Sinai Medical Center and John La Puma, Chef MD, and author of The Big Book of Culinary Medicine.
Join us live on Wednesdays at 11:00 a.m. PST or listen to the archived shows at your convenience. As always, your comments are most appreciated.

    Let the Sun Shine In

As our listeners are aware, we broadcast The Empty Nesters show from Los Angeles. While we appreciate our locale most of the time, this past week has been a reminder of the goodness that is Southern California. Most of the country has been in the deep freeze with daytime temperatures hovering around the zero degree mark, and here we are basking in the eighty degree sunshine. This glorious weather reminds Jill of why she and her husband migrated here and Claudia thanks her parents for having had the good sense to find L.A. and each other in the early fifties.
We had the great pleasure to welcome back fabulous guest Damian Holbrook, Senior Writer for T.V. Guide Magazine. We dished about the premiers of American Idol and 24. Lost will be starting the new season shortly, but sadly Lipstick Jungle won't be continuing. And what is going on with Grey's Anatomy ? The Golden Globe awards show gave us plenty to talk about- Spielberg, Renee, Kate, Mickey, Anna and the list goes on. We hope Damian visits us often.
Next week's show comes on the heels of the Presidential Inauguration. We will be speaking with a couple of "twenty-something" corespondents on the scene in Washington D.C. Also, we expect a visit from Jill's daughter, home on semester break from graduate studies abroad.
For any Southern Californian's- Dave Romanelli of Yeah Dave Yoga, a guest from last summer, will be featured at the Ojai Valley Inn's Arts & Leisure Series February 27-28, 2009 with a yoga and chocolate event.
    (805) 646-1111 for more information.
Next broadcast- Wednesday ,January 21st 11:00 a.m. PST

    New Year, New Music

    New Year, New Music

As the title suggests, we welcomed 2009 with a brand new theme song, composed uniquely for us. We love its rock and roll edge!
The first show of the new year featured Paula Begoun, the Cosmetics Cop, and author of several bestselling books including Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me. Paula provided a trove of information about skin care products- myths and facts - to help us sort through the claims made by the various companies. She tests and rates hundreds of products and breaks it all down for us on her website. The link is posted in the list at the right.
On the personal side, three of our four kids are back in school and the fourth is due home for semester break from her graduate studies abroad. We plan to have her join us on the show to discuss studying abroad, especially in a country currently at war.
Next week's show will feature the return of a favorite guest, Damain Holbrook, Senior Writer for T.V. Guide Magazine. We have much to talk about with the January return of popular shows such as 24, American Idol, Damages and Lost to name but a few.
As always, we welcome you to join us on the air on Wednesdays at 11:00 a.m. PST or with your comments.
