From Linked In Q & A - what do you think? Is networking online fruitful?

    vinod
Vinod Bangalore posted this question on Linked In. It is a question that I run into daily with my Social Networking & Media Coaching practice, so I wanted to share the answer that I wrote with you.

    http://www.linkedin.com/in/vinodbangalore

We receive Linkedin Invites, we accept but has it been fruitfull? Are we able to get business and help each other?

Day in and out we try to multiple our network, we receive invites and we accept. Guys, have you been able to discuss Synergies? The whole idea has to be thought of again, we should make attempts to understand each one's business, the value they can add with their services to our company and vice versa.

People plz put in here your best thoughts.

    Cheers
    Vinod

    My answer:

    Vinod,

This is the most important question for a lot of people. Why bother with the time of building an online network?

I personally find that connecting to people in groups and clubs really helps, and what I call "multi-dimensional" networking. We become naturally closer when we are connected in 3, 4, or more networks (websites) and even closer when you add face to face! I use video conferencing instead of face to face for global networking. See my interviews on youtube.com/drsallywitt.

Christophe Poizat is one of the best examples and mentors on really using Social Networking to build powerful business contacts, and promote great projects for the planet at the same time. You can join his group here on Linked In - INSE and/or the www.inse.collectivex.com group. International Society for Social Entrepreneurs.

Dr. Ivan Misner is the master at Networking in person and through an organization that he has built called BNI. Business Networking International. His groups work internationally to help people in business learn to network efficiently and always. They use Linked In and Ecademy to add dimension to the relationships globally.

Thomas Power is the Chairman of Ecademy. There are groups for Ecademy and Linked In users on both websites. The style and culture are different in the sites, so it is great to know people on both.

I coach people in using Social Networking and Social Media, and am so glad that you asked this question!

    Linked In - I Don't Know You

I am teaching a lot of clients and students how to foster closer relationships with their network. How do you keep up with so many people? Finding discussions that you can have with your contacts, and things in common make it easier to develop those relationships to a new level.

One of the ways is to invite them to other places that you like to network. I invite people every week to connect with on multiple networks like Ecademy, Linked In, Facebook, Perfect Networker, Twitter, Plurk and more.

I have found that when I invite people another network to Linked In, that there are some that don't realize how important certain actions are. For example, if you do not want to connect with someone on Linked In, please consider simply choosing Archive to remove the invitation from your Inbox.

If you select "I Don't Know" it is a very negative action as far as Linked In is concerned. Linked In restricts the account of the person that gets "IDK's", and the actions cannot be rectified. Linked In doesn't care if it was a mistake, or if you changed your mind, or if you apologized later. When I get an invitation from someone, or a question, I do a search to see if we are connected any where else.

Most people do not want to harm the person that sent them an invitation, so it is a good thing to know!

    Happy Days in 2009,

    Sally

I am hosting my first one Wednesday night to learn the system. Some are free, some are with a charge. Mine is FREE!! I visited my first one yesterday, and I loved it.
