In response to Illness Defined's second question about Inderal. Response by Col. Lugo: Inderal (propranolol) is a medication that can reduce the "flight or fight" response, and some studies have shown it to be of benefit in reducing the symptoms of PTSD. While it is not a cure, it can be very helpful for some patients for symptom control, and we do use it with our patients.

In response to Illness Defined's question about heavy medal poisoning. Response by Col. Lugo: There have been several studies on the effects of retained shrapnel, but none looking at the possibility of a link to PTSD. One difficulty with a study like this is that the same traumatic event that led to the person receiving a shrapnel wound could also be traumatic enough to cause PTSD, separate from the effect of the shrapnel. With regard to Michael McKinlet's question about contractors working for the federal government, who may have PTSD. Response by Col. Lugo: This is outside my area, though in my experience each contractor sets their own rules about employment criteria.

Defense Contractors will not hire PYSD retirees because of the medication we are on (antidepressants). So it doesn't matter if we have a Secret security clearance. How do we ger around this?
