Interview with Jo Cavanagh, CEO of nonprofit Family Life, Melbourne, Australia on success, vision an

After 30 years as a nonprofit CEO, I found the interview with Jo Cavanagh refreshing and renewing. Jo is the innovative, visionary leader of a nonprofit agency in Melbourne, Australia, called "Family Life." Committed throughout her stellar career to keeping vulnerable children with their families, Jo has created and developed a highly-effective strategy for not only helping families care for their children but connecting those families to each other and their communities for lasting support. "Families shouldn't look to agencies for support when they are in trouble," Jo said. "They should have a network where they can turn to each other and receive the support they need." Agencies have a role in helping but should be a temporary resource, not a permanent crutch.

What a refreshing approach and one I have subscribed to for my career as well. However, Jo has been able to not only articulate a strategy but implement it and provide the evidence that it works. In addition, she has created an exciting book describing the process called, "Creating Capable Communities," that is available on her website.

On top of this, or more correctly, in parallel, Jo has been doing a lot of thinking about leading the way to success as she moves to the next phase of leadership. She sees herself becoming an "Invisible leader" to empower her staff to take on the leadership in the future. As I said on the air, that takes an incredibly mature leader to even think that way, and of course, that describes Jo perfectly. Take a few minutes to listen to Jo describe a program that should be replicated in every community.

You can learn more about Jo's exciting programs at www.familylife.com.au.

Chris Keane, author of "The Hunter," the title of Steve McQueen's last movie

I have never seen 30 minutes go by faster than this morning's interview with author and scriptwriter, Chris Keane. Chris's intellect, humor and candor make for exciting listening--and learning. His new book, Romancing the A-List: Writing the Script the Big Stars Want to Make," was published two weeks ago and is getting rave reviews.

A few years ago, in my own quest for figuring out my directions, I took a week long scriptwriting class from Chris at the Maui Writer's Conference. I learned so much from his casual but piercing teaching style--including the fact that, for now, I'm not sure I have the discipline or passion required to write a successful script. There may also be an issue about talent! However, reading Chris's new book stirred up my interest all over again.

He presents such a clear and simple way of approaching the craft of script writing. It's a fun read whether or not you have any interest in writing a script for a movie. But if you do, it's a must read.

Chris also shared some personal insights that he recently acquired, giving an equally candid peak into his own life and psyche. This was a great interview--and so much fun that I forgot for a few minutes that I was the host.

Don't forget to check out my website, www.CoachJudyNelson.com and to sign up for your advance copy of my new book, "Leading the Way to Success."
