The statistics state that 10 million people around the world could die from breast cancer in the next 25 years without the cures to prevent it. BAN would like to enlighten African American women of the realities behind breast cancer, while paying tribute to survivors of breast cancer. BAN would also like to share, the love for mothers who may have passed on, to a higher reward as well.

Every 2 minutes, there is a new breast cancer diagnosis.

Every 14 minutes, a life is lost to the disease.

Over 40,000 people will die this year; about 400 of them will be men.

85% of all diagnoses have no family history.

1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer.

Breast cancer is the leading cause of death in women between ages 40 and 55.

These are from breastcancer.org:

Breast cancer is the leading cancer among white and African American women. African American women are more likely to die from this disease.

Breast cancer incidence in women has increased from one in 20 in 1960 to one in eight today.

The exact cause of breast cancer is not known. Factors that can increase a woman's risk include heredity, early puberty, late childbearing, obesity, and lifestyle factors such as heavy alcohol consumption and smoking. The biggest risk factor for breast cancer is age -- just growing older. Most breast cancers occur in women over the age of 50, and women over 60 are at the highest risk.

__________________________________________________________________

Surviving and Thriving After Breast Cancer: Mother's Day Tribute

Special Guests:
Peggy Nicholson-chapter president of the Sisters Network® Inc.
Crystal Brown-Tatum- author of Saltwater Taffy and Red High Heels
Maxine B.
Incidence and Mortality Rate Trends

In the United States, breast cancer is the most common non-skin cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related death in women. Each year, a small number of men also are diagnosed with or die from breast cancer. Although the breast cancer diagnosis rate has increased, there has been a steady drop in the overall breast cancer death rate since the early 1990's.

While the incidence rate is lower for African Americans than Whites, the mortality rate is higher. Women of other racial and ethnic groups have lower incidence and mortality rates.

It is estimated that approximately $8.1 billion* is spent in the United States each year on treatment of breast cancer.

*In 2004 dollars, as reported in Brown ML, Riley GF, Schussler N, and Etzioni RD. Estimating health care costs related to cancer treatment from SEER-Medicare data.

On Thursday, May 8, 2008 8pm-10pm EST, The Black Authors Network (BAN) will open its phone lines for any caller who wants to tell the world how much they love their mothers!

It is also an opportunity for those who have survived breast cancer to speak out and for those who have lost a loved one to breast cancer, to remember and pay tribute to their life in a inspirational Mother’s Day Salute. I hope the literary community will join us in this open forum to address breast cancer and to thank the mothers, aunts, daughters, and sisters who are working towards a prevention and eventual cure for breast cancer in our global community.

If you are a 'survivor mom' or you know someone who would like to participate in our Mother's Day Tribute, please email Ella to schedule your speaking engagement at: ellacurry@edc-creations.com
