Continuing our BEST COMPOSERS series, tonight's episode will focus on the life and works of Johann Sebastian Bach.

Bach is widely considered the single greatest, most important composer to have ever walked this earth. When it comes to the vast majority of writers and critics, and certainly of musicians/composers, they simply cannot find superlatives enough in their assessments of him.

A native of Eisenach, Germany, J.S. Bach was not only a  composer, but an organist, harpsichordist, violist, violinist, church choirmaster, teacher, and conductor. His sacred and secular works for choir, orchestra, and solo instruments drew together the strands of the Baroque period and brought it to its ultimate maturity. Although he did not introduce new forms, he enriched the prevailing German style with a robust contrapuntal technique, an unrivalled control of harmonic and motivic organisation, and the adaptation of rhythms, forms and textures from abroad.

He also really liked to have sex. I'm not just saying that to be vulgar, either! While only ever married twice, J.S. Bach was the father of...get ready for this...20 children! TWENTY KIDS!!

Tune in for more on the life and music of this genius! :)
