Exclusive: Obama to hit McCain on Keating Five Mike Allen Sun Oct 5, 11:09 PM ET Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) on Monday will launch a multimedia campaign to draw attention to the involvement of Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) in the “Keating Five” savings-and-loan scandal of 1989-91, which blemished McCain’s public image and set him on his course as a self-styled reformer. ADVERTISEMENT Retaliating for what it calls McCain's “guilt-by-association” tactics, the Obama campaign is e-mailing millions of supporters a link to a website, KeatingEconomics.com, which will have a 13-minute documentary on the scandal beginning at noon Eastern time on Monday. The overnight e-mails urge recipients to pass the link on to friends. The Obama campaign, including its surrogates appearing on radio and television, will argue that the deregulatory fervor that caused massive, cascading savings-and-loan collapses in the late ‘80s was pursued by McCain throughout his career, and helped cause the current credit crisis. Obama-Biden communications director Dan Pfeiffer said: “While John McCain may want to turn the page on his erratic response to the current economic crisis, we think voters will find his involvement in a similar crisis to be particularly interesting. His involvement with Keating is a window into McCain’s economic past, present, and future.” Obama’s offensive comes after McCain’s running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, spent two days telling voters, donors and reporters that Obama showed poor judgment in his relationship with the former radical William Ayers. McCain’s campaign has vowed to make a major issue of Obama’s Chicago relationships in coming days, with a senior McCain official telling Politico that they are “the vehicle that allows us to question Obama’s truthfulness about his past and his plans for the future.” The McCain campaign also plans to invoke money launderer Tony Rezko. Officials say they will not bring up Obama's former minister, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, because McCain has forbade his campaign from using that as an attack. But the officials said outside groups supporting McCain might highlight Wright. Responding to the Keating blast from the past, a Republican official said the Obama team seemed "frantic" at "the mere mention of the word 'Ayers.'" “The fact that the Obama team is recycling this old garbage 24 hours after Bill Ayers entered the race is a testament to how worried the Obama camp is of an unfettered airing of his associations," the official said. "Obama is a clever enough politician to know that his unexplored relationships with terrorists and felons are a serious liability in a race this close.” The Obama website says: “The current economic crisis demands that we understand John McCain's attitudes about economic oversight and corporate influence in federal regulation. ... The Keating scandal is eerily similar to today's credit crisis, where a lack of regulation and cozy relationships between the financial industry and Congress has allowed banks to make risky loans and profit by bending the rules.” In 1991, the Senate Ethics Committee cleared McCain of corruption charges but cited him for “poor judgment” in meeting with federal regulators on behalf of Charles H. Keating Jr., a political patron who went to prison for fraud in connection with the collapse of the California-based Lincoln Savings and Loan Association, which at the time was one of the biggest financial failures in the nation’s history. A trailer for the campaign-produced documentary features William K. Black, a former bank regulator who McCain met with in the Keating case, saying: “The Keating Five involved all the things that have brought the modern crisis. Senator McCain has not learned the lesson, and has continued to follow policies that are going to produce a disaster.” The Obama website has news clips and a narrative explaining the scandal and McCain’s involvement for voters and reporters. The Keating episode took a searing toll on the senator and his wife, Cindy. Robert Timberg, in his 1999 biography “John McCain: An American Odyssey,” wrote that the trouble began with the senator “carelessly choosing his friends.” “McCain had stumbled into a scandal of immense proportions,” Timberg wrote. “Charles Keating, it turned out, had built his financial empire on the life savings of elderly retirees, men and women who watched helplessly as their dreams were snuffed out along with the assets of Keating’s Lincoln Savings and Loan Association. “The story was complicated, but the press found a tag line that simplified it. McCain and four other senators with ties to Keating were dubbed ‘the Keating Five.’ The label stuck, imputing to all the same degree of guilt even though it soon became evident that at least two, McCain and former astronaut John Glenn of Ohio, were far less culpable, if they were culpable at all.” Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-Ill.), a close Obama adviser who is the fourth-ranking House Democratic leader, brought up McCain’s association with Keating on CNN’s “Late Edition” on Sunday. “John McCain got admonished by the Senate Ethics Committee for that,” Emanuel said.
Wake up Call Show
10/5/2008 4:50 PM UTC
The WakeUpCallshow intends to remind every voter on need to know information about John Mccain. It was awfuly smart of him to pick such a controversial VP to keep all eyes off of him as he slithers his way in as to keep us from be reminded about some skeletons in his closet. Do you remember his role with S& L scandal with the Keaton Five. He and his buddies cost the American people billions of dollars with this ethic scandal. Wow he has always been good at manuevering his way out once the shi@#$ hits the fan. It was nice of him to ask to suspend the debate but Mccain needed to be reminded that people in hell want ice water. We can no longer just turn the other cheek while John McCain continues his lies in public. Do your homework its all there on record. John Mccain once admitted to intentionally filing false income tax returns to defraud the IRS by not claiming thousands of dollars in gifts McCain and his family received from Charles Keating and Keating’s company. Yes the same buddy in the keaton five scandal. Years later, when the IRS noticed Keating’s company had written the gifts off to McCain as business expenses, McCain fessed up and admitted filing false returns and made a “donation” to the U.S. Treasury to cover the amount he defrauded American tax payers. McCain also leaked information about the Keating Five to the press multiple times in an effort to appear above the other Senators in the scandal. This is his history of behaviour simillar to how he played his fellow POWs in Vietnam. A 1989 Phoenix New Times article summed it up best with thier title - McCain: The Most Reprehensible of the Keating Five. Well the fruit is not falling far from the tree either with his wife, Cindy McCain, along with her father who made a $359,000 investment in retail property owned by Charles Keating in 1986, a year before John McCain first met with federal regulators on behalf of Keating. Keating was later convicted on 73 counts of fraud, conspiracy, and other crimes. Years later, Cindy McCain sold her investment for $15,000,000. For anyone not aware of the Keating Five, here’s a very simple summary: Charles Keating owned a savings and loan in California. He was illegally using the money of his bank’s customers to give loans to himself and friends that they didn’t have to repay, and to speculate on risky real estate investments, which was strictly forbidden by U.S. law (and was one cause of the Great Depression). When the feds found out what was going on and launched an investigation into Keating and his company, Keating called five U.S. Senators whom he had wined, dined, and lavished with hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign donations and personal gifts. Keating asked the five Senators to tell the feds to bug off, and the five Senators, later known as the Keating Five, obliged, meeting with federal investigators twice and pressuring them to stop investigating Keating’s crimes. They bought Keating some time, but the feds didn’t give up and eventually Keating was nailed. The reason the feds were so persistent was because Keating wasn’t playing with mere chump change. Keating blew $3.4 billion through illegal personal loans and bad investments, and the FDIC had to reimburse Keating’s customers who had been ripped off. (Background Info - Keating wasn’t the only Savings and Loan owner who was committing fraud, 20% of the S&L’s that failed during that three year period were found to have been caused by fraud and/or insider trading. The failure of the Lincoln Savings and Loan and other S&L’s pushed the country into a recession, costing the U.S. government $126 billion dollars in FDIC insurance payouts to investors. All of this came to a crescendo during the first year of the presidency of George H.W. Bush, who pushed through the S&L bailout plan to keep the economy afloat.) When the involvement of the Keating Five was made public, a scandal erupted and the Senate Ethics Committee launched their own investigation into whether the Keating Five had violated Senate ethics rules. The other four Senators left office either immediately or within one term. John McCain was formally rebuked by the Senate Ethics Committee for exercising “poor judgment” for intervening with the federal regulators on behalf of Keating, but because McCain accepted Keating’s gifts of travel and vacations to Bahama while McCain was a member of the House of Representatives (he served one term there before moving to the Senate), the Senate claimed they had no jurisdiction to censure McCain. (However the meetings to pressure federal regulators occurred during the first few months of McCain serving in the Senate in 1987, so that excuse doesn’t hold up). John McCain then went back to the drawing board and re-invented himself as “the Straight-Talk Express” and the media gobbled it up. “Tax-Evading-Criminal” doesn’t sound as catchy as “Straight-Shooting-War-Hero”. Ever since the scandal, when McCain lies today, it’s never questioned, because he’s a “straight talker”. The man has more skeletons in his closet than any politician in history. The Keating Five is just one bone. After reading the Slate article, ask yourself: if Obama or any other candidate had a scandal such as the Keating Five in their past, would the mainstream media never question it? Could any other candidate even have a political career after the Keating Five? For the other four Senators, the answer is no. And while Charles Keating went to prison for his role in the scandal, John McCain swept it under the rug and could soon be President of the United States of America. Perhaps while he is so busy digging a hole for Obama to fall in with all these great ads tying Obama to the detroit mayor and Kenya leaders, Rev Wright. He may fall in it himself when people begin to really look closely at this crook. Its no wonder our economy is in shambles look at the folks we have operating our goverment. Look at thier background. We should be reminded of Mccain's circle of close friends and business partners such as Graham, and Karl Rove and some of these others in his group that are behind deregulation and taking money from lobbyist and much more. LOOK AT THE VIDEO on wakeupcallshow profile screen ON WHY MCCAIN SHOULD NOT BE VOTED IN AS PRESIDENT IT REMINDS OF THE OLD AND THE NEW. IT IS VERY MUCH ON POINT AND A COULD REMINDED OF MCCAIN'S EXTREME BEHAVIOUR, HIS LIES AND LACK OF GOOD JUDGMENT AND IMPULSIVENESS. He glorifies his own military service while voting against veterans, he opposed the additional funding for safe military equipment for amored vehicles for soldiers in Iraq costing many thier lives. He didnt support the increase on the GI Bill. He has also voted against increases in veterans healthcare while supporting price cuts for the wealthy though. Well John why dont you support your fellow veterans, since you are proud of military service? Lets keep it real and not be fooled by this man who only will put us in another war. Host Wake Up Call

Disabled under 62's living in Elderly housing I live in elderly housing,I am a victim of a young girl in a wheelchair who makes up all kind of stories about me, outright lies, and reports them to my management company in NH. They in turn tell me to stop harassing and threatening her, which i certainly am not doing, or face eviction and ! Another young 20 something, big as an ox,roams around the complex all day, just following people around and breaking things. We have not been able to use the picnic table for 2 years, we have them roaming in the halls or doing their laundry after 11 pm,leaving lights on in rooms they jsut left ,and so forth. They knock on doors and ask for food or money and all their freinds have keys to the place/ Why don't these people have their own place or why aren't they put to useful work. They are capable of making babies, dating, driving, harassing, just about anything but working, and to say anything at all in response to their harassments, make even more trouble for the elderly. I find this going on all across the country ,not only with this mangement company, but others. Would you like these rude, drunk, druggies and worse living with you in your home or aprtemnt? Why do you force them on people who have worked hard all their lives and are now lookin g for a little peace, quiet and contentment. No one is discriminating against the truly poor helplesss people, but these people have too much time on their hands, and thrive on causing disturbances like the drug deal that just went down in Brooklyn and the graffiti on the wall in NOrth Grosvenordale, same out of state management company, they are allowed to leave condoms in th eparking lot and have homeless friends live in all winter and beer parties galore with impunity. Reporting them only leads to your own home getting ransacked or invaded , your car alarm being set off nightly,or vandalized, your being followed wherever you go,the management sides with them and doesn't want to hear it as they believe their position in life squelches any consequences to their actions.and all that governemnt money coming in is nice, too. If you do not have this in your home, why do you make us endure it? Please find a place for these troublemaking individuals, possibly Iraq,if not in your backyard. I raised my kids, now they are paying for yours and others' to degrade, demean and destroy the earned retirement in peace we so deserve. Please do something. and soon, this haeen ongoing fo ryears, whover thought of bundling up such losers with fine people ought to lose their license for being a human being. Thanks, from a constituent who wrote you and you gave the name of legal aid to. Take Action Now!

Thanks for your wise contributions on BTR. Let's not sweep single parenting topics and MALE RESPONSIBLITY under the rug. I realize that I am TAGGED as bitter and disgruntled, but what would that make men who walk away from their children? I thank you for continuing the labels on men who are not responsible. My child's father is trying to tell the world that he is NOT a deadbeat, NOT irresponsible, DID NOT walk away, DOES want to parent. You guys have helped me to make it evident that it is not what a man says, but what he does. Therefore his stereotypical label is befitting to him, no matter what he protests. MEN MUST BE PROACTIVE IN PRESERVING THEIR LEGAL RIGHTS AS A FATHER. I will continue to blog, discuss, and support women who want to talk about it. AMERICA is in denial & shame about SINGLE MOMS and fatherhood responsiblity. There's a movement in America by women to further remove men from the family, and teach young mothers to make a man give up his parental rights as an ultimatum. This is more damaging to our society than male castration. We have more conversations on how to date, than how to parent. IT IS NOT OK FOR A CHILD TO BE WITHOUT A FATHER. We know very well how to live without fathers, it time to learn how to live with fathers. The children are hurting, obviously not the mothers. Thanks for taking this issue seriously. www.myspace.com/kirilove www.blogtalkradio.com/psycheofthesingleparent http://themakingofadeadbeat.blogspot.com

CBC FOUNDATION PRESIDENT REMEMBERS THE REV. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. ON THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF HIS DEATH WASHINGTON – Elsie L. Scott, Ph.D., president and chief executive officer of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF), today reflected on the legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. on the 40th anniversary of his death and the Foundation’s efforts to continue his good works. “There has been much progress in America since Dr. King’s untimely death – and yet our nation still has so far to go,” Dr. Scott said. “The progress is that we have many more African Americans who are in positions of power in public office, Corporate America, entertainment, etc. We also have many more African Americans in the middle class. However, the African-American poverty rate is still more than 20 percent. It is also important to remember that Dr. King’s focus at the time of his death was heavily on economic justice. He was in Memphis to support the rights of sanitation workers and he was planning the Poor Peoples Campaign for Washington, D.C. Sadly, that part of his dream has not been realized. Like Dr. King, the CBC Foundation’s mission and programs are aimed at reducing societal disparities. On this the 40th anniversary of his assassination, we want to remind everyone, especially the nation’s policymakers, that there is still an unfinished agenda.”

This week's guest on GOD UNPLUGGED is singer/songwriter Heather Powers. Heather draws inspiration from a very troubled past. Her compelling life saga includes assault, rape, addiction, divorce, emotional breakdown and utter brokenness. While her story is often incomprehensible, she focuses not on the trauma, but on the amazing restoration and redemption she has experienced. Powers has shared the stage with the likes of Huey Lewis and The News. During each episode of GOD UNPLUGGED I chat with famous authors, actors, athletes and recording artists about their faith. In the last decade, countless revisionist scholars have followed in the footsteps of John Dittmer and Charles Payne in the pursuit of creating a more complete and complex narrative of the black freedom struggle through historically grounded local studies. Placing local people at the center of civil rights history rather than at its periphery forces the myths of the movement to crumble. Local studies demonstrate that non-violence coexisted alongside self-defense in the South and throughout the nation. They reveal the role women played as local organizers alongside men who missed the spotlight as national mobilizers. Finally, local studies implode the notion that the civil rights movement took place only in the South between 1954 and 1965 and challenge the sharp dichotomies made between civil rights and black power. The goal now is to connect the local, the regional, the national, and when possible, the transnational. Local people from all over the nation drove the 1968 Poor People’s Campaign (PPC)—the first truly national, multiracial anti-poverty movement. The Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) built Resurrection City—a temporary shantytown of plywood A-frame houses on the National Mall—to display the appalling living conditions endured by the poor and provide a home base for daily protests at various government buildings. But the nine regional caravans that transported the multi-racial coalition of the poor to the capital connected local movements with the national campaign in Washington, D.C. The caravans enabled local people to place their individual needs in a national context and recognize the systemic roots of their poverty. This presentation focuses on the most dramatic of the nine regional caravans, the Mule Train—a caravan of approximately fifteen mule-drawn covered wagons—and Marks, Mississippi, the small Delta town that served as the launching pad for the Mule Train and the PPC. Caravanning to the capital as a moving political theater, the Mule Train enabled participants to perform the limits on poor people’s mobility—both economic and physical. Cultural geographer Tim Cresswell argues that mobility is a site of ideology construction that often invokes contradictory meanings, since it has meant freedom and opportunity for some and shiftlessness and deviance for others. This analysis considers how representations of the Mule Train and its participants fall along racial, class, and gendered lines and how the caravan used mobility as a form of political resistance. The participants’ courage to endure the long and arduous journey and protest in Washington challenges culture of poverty depictions of the poor as lazy and apathetic. Drawing on interviews with Mule Train participants and SCLC archival materials, this presentation demonstrates how the PPC transformed one Delta community and its residents and considers how representations of and memorials to the Mule Train have affected perceptions of poverty nationally and people’s experiences locally. Connecting the past with the present and concentrating on the process of organizing rather than evaluating whether or not the PPC succeeded in meeting its goals, can help us understand what motivates people to join social movements and how they effect participants’ lives. Tuesday, April 29, 2008 12:27:13 PM Logic 101-Good common sense. Chief Minister Ra El Boasts of his piety, and self righteousness because he kicked his son Ka EL out of the Temple. He slanders him online, degrades his character to make himself look good. The other side of the coin is that he amalgamated (Mr. Swannigan EL Ra EL) with a European Woman and Made the son that he now cast out as a disbeliever and/or hyprocrite. A feirce and cruel king minister who puts to death all those, who do not honor him. You poor brothers and sisters if you keep on living, you will see. I challenge the world to interview his officials, officers, members who were kicked out of his tumorous body. Ephesians 6 Tuesday, April 29, 2008 12:16:38 PM What does Chief Minister Ra El and Past Governor Pataki have in common? They both purchased prostitutes for their own personal usage, with government funds. Ra El purchased his prostitutes in California(With Temple Donations) and Pataki in NY with his governments funds. The "Chief of Ministers had sexual relations with his adept-sheik brothers sister woman, she came to him for counseling and later became his wife. That is against supreme laws, earthly and divine. Their National Grand Sheik Chained smoked reefers in route to Chicago's Convention when they were under Percy Davis El and with Braswell Bey. Did you Know that?
