This is habit number five and to represent this habit one must attempt to be a good listner, an empathic listener.  Have you spoken to someone and you can see by their body language that they are more focused on formulating their response and less on listening to what you have to say. So how do you know when an individual or audience is engaged and actively listening to you?  When you are listening to someone are you making eye contact? Do you ask questions to clarify what they say and reach a cleaer understanding or are you faking it and only nodding your head in agreement while you are focused on what you will say? Whether you are a coach, politician, executive or parent are you listening to those who are important to you with the intent to understand them before you ask them to understand you? AskLowell examines how empathic listening will improve relationships with others and increase your effectiveness.   00:30:00360 MindsetnoStephen Covey,Listening Skills,Academic Engagement,Collaboration,ResultsStephen Covey in his book 7 Habits of Highly Effective People lists one of his seven habits as "Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood". Does your definition for success include WINNING at any cost? Perhaps your definition for success requires that you only have to show up and you are entitled to be reognized and rewarded. John Wooden in 1934 defined success this way, "Success is the peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you made the effort to become the best of which you are capable."  Having the mental toughness and discipline to constantly strive to be better without the expectation of reward or recognition is challenging and some would say is the attitude demonstrated by champions, leaders, or heros. What is your definition for success? Do you practice being your best without a desire for reward or recognition?  00:31:00360 MindsetnoSuccess,John Wooden,Leadership,Mental Toughness,WinningDoes your definition for success include WINNING at any cost? On January 8 to 12 I was at Copper mountain watching the aerial daredevils on board and skis attack the half pipe and any number of man-made challenges placed on the snow. I leave it to the USOC or FIS to define and describe the events while I focus on the amazing effort of potential US Olympic medalists such as Shawn White, Louie Vito, Elana Hight, or Lindsey Vonn.  The teams have yet to be defined but this short list more likely than not have spots on the USSA Olympic rosters.
