  Making a way out of no way, Tanisha A. Cunningham has beaten the odds and redefined the stereotypes associated with children in foster care. Coming from a troubled and abusive home and then entering into an environment that would later question her success in life, she was determined to take control of her destiny. Today, Tanisha holds a bachelor’s degree in Human Services, a Masters degree in Public Administration from Rutgers University and has over 17 years experience working in government agencies including the NYC Administration for Children’s Services. Recently, Tanisha became the Founder and Executive Director to the Underground Railroad to Success, which allowed her to give birth to her vision to start a non profit organization for youth aging out of foster care. Having survived the foster care system herself by successfully transitioning to her own independence, she truly understands the fear of not knowing what's going to happen next. Now it's time for her to go back and help others through that same journey of success. With a mission to become the next Harriet Tubman of this generation, her goal is to lead as many youth in foster care as she can through the tunnel of success where they will find their independence as adults while becoming an integral part of our society.

  Based on last week's segment on, "How Healthy Space between you and your mate is really healthy for your relationship “, we will continue our journey on building healthy relationships in our communities. This week we will take a distinct look at the difference between men and women where sex and intimacy is concern. We will take a look at the male perspective on sex vs. intimacy as well as the female perspective. The question of,”Do we need Sex & Intimacy to be in love with one another” will be asked? We will talk further on healthy bedroom conversations that we should have in order to convey our desires and decrease extra martial affairs in our relationships and in our communities. Join me, and my special guest Relationship Coach Ryeal Simms, Who R those Guys and Terry Ebony as we look more in depth of how we can build healthy relationships when it concerns sex and intimacy.

  Ms. Onika Pascal the Poet/Author is here!!!! Born in Trinidad, Pascalle Onika Lewis now resides in Brooklyn, New York, where she recently completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology at Medgar Evers College. Her first self-published book of poetry entitled, "Collections of a See Through Soul-Portraits," written under the pen name Onika Pascal, debuted in 2008. Since then, she has been working on many projects, including a new poetry volume, "Collections of a See Through Soul-Bardvillian Symphonies," and a memoir titled, "Becoming More Than Just An Orange." Pascal's talent of turning words into phenomenal stories and pieces of art is one that is infectious. Pascal's publisher, Pam Osbey of Osbey Books, Inc. solidifies this: "With words that pierce your soul and beg you to enter the temple of openness and curiosity for life, Onika Pascal's pen commands your attention at first glance," Osbey explains. "Working with this inquisitive soul whose spirit is unique through a lens all her own, I have been honored to see the progression of a writer who has only touched the surface of her literary purpose." When she's not writing, Pascal serves as a group leader with the Misunderstood Youth Development Center, a non-profit organization that provides a place for youth to express themselves.   September is National Sickle Cell Disease Awareness Month

  Did you know that that September is National Sickle Cell Disease Awareness Month?

  Do we all know what Sickle Cell Anemia?

  Sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disorder that affects red blood cells. People with sickle cell disease have red blood cells that contain mostly hemoglobin* S, an abnormal type of hemoglobin. Sometimes these red blood cells become sickle-shaped (crescent shaped) and have difficulty passing through small blood vessels.

  So you ask how we get it and passed it on to our children.

  Sickle cell conditions are inherited from parents in much the same way as blood type, hair color and texture, eye color and other physical traits. The types of hemoglobin a person makes in the red blood cells depend upon what hemoglobin genes the person inherits from his or her parents. Like most genes, hemoglobin genes are inherited in two sets…one from each parent.

  Examples:

  ·         If one parent has Sickle Cell Anemia and the other is Normal, all of the children will have sickle cell trait.

  ·         If one parent has Sickle Cell Anemia and the other has Sickle Cell Trait, there is a 50% chance (or 1 out of 2) of having a baby with either sickle cell disease or sickle cell trait with each pregnancy.

  ·         When both parents have Sickle Cell Trait, they have a 25% chance (1 of 4) of having a baby with sickle cell disease with each pregnancy.

  So why am I talking about this disease because it homes for many African American families in some sort of why. It is not a Black disease but it seems to be highly common or discuss about in our culture. It is a real disease that is not health maintain can be deadly. There is a lot that a family has to be very knowledgeable with the Sickle Cell Disease. I do not have the sickle cell disease but I do have the sickle trait and so do two of my children. Fortunately for us my husband does not have the trait. I have a dear friend, Tamara whose son has the sickle cell disease.  Fortunate for him mom became very educated on this disease when it was announced that her son had the disease. Although she knew from a young that she had the sickle cell trait, her mate did not know; if he did it could have been easier for the family. Her son is very healthy now but when he comes across a cold or gets a fever he has to be immediately rushed to the hospital for observation. She often tells me that with good eating habits her son can live a long and prosperous life.  

  What can we do as a community?

  My Message to all is get tested, find out it f you have the trait or if your spouse does as well. Get educated on this disease because it is out there. 

  Please find it in your heart to donate to your local sickle cell office or participate in various sickle cell walks across the US. It is very important.
