James Hegedus attended the California College of Arts and Crafts where he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Upon graduation he moved to Los Angeles where he interviewed with Hannah Barbera Studio and was hired as a Layout and Background artist to work on their animation programs. Hegedus began his live action career as an Illustrator and Storyboard Artist on the remake of Rod Serling’s Twilight Zone television series at CBS Studios. After two seasons of working on the series he took the opportunity to work on his first live action feature film, The Milagro Beanfield War, directed by Robert Redford, working as a Production Illustrator. Hegedus became the Art Director for Apogee Productions, the visual effects company led by John Dykstra who had been awarded an Oscar for his pioneering work on George Lucas’s Star Wars.He continued to illustrate and art direct, and then in 1998 accepted the role of Production Designer for the Dream Works CGI production of Shrek, the first animated feature length film to be awarded an Oscar by the Academy.Hegedus continues to work in these various capacities in both live action and animation.
