Martin Hill joined Weta Digital in 2004, and worked on King Kong for which he developed the hair shading and rendering technology, and went on to Lead Sequences. Martin attended the University of Edinburgh where he studied Architecture and then Mathematics, and then graduated with an MSC in Computer Animation from Bournemouth University. He went on to work at Double Negative as a Technical Director where he co-developed the motion control software used on a number of films, such as Finding Neverland and Batman Begins. The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep was Martin’s first show as a Shader supervisor, work that included extending sub surface techniques used on the Lord of the Rings, and which won him a nomination for a VES award for Outstanding Animated Character in a Live Action Motion Picture. He continued this role over several films including 2010 Visual Effects Oscar® winner Avatar, for which he also co-developed the global illumination lighting pipeline/spherical harmonic pipeline and managed the shading department. Martin’s latest projects were as Visual Effects Supervisor on Prometheus and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. He is currently working on The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
