Michael Blake is an American author, best known for his film adaptation of his novel Dances With Wolves. It is a film adaptation of the 1988 book of the same name by Mr. Blake and tells the story of a Union Army Lieutenant who travels to the American frontier to find a military post, and his dealings with a group of Lakota Indians. Mr. Kevin Costner developed the film over five years, with a modest budget. Dances With Wolves went on to win seven Academy Awards including Best Picture and Mr. Blake won an Academy Award for his screenplay. It is credited as a leading influence for the revitalization of the western genre of filmmaking in Hollywood. In 2007 Dances With Wolves was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library Of Congress as being culturally, historically or aesthetically significant. Mr. Blake began writing when he was stationed at Walker Air Base, where he wrote for the base newspaper. He studied journalism at the University Of new Mexico and film at the Berkeley CA. During the 80's only one of his screenplays was produced called Stacey's Knights. The movie starred Mr. Kevin Costner, who later convinced him to write Dances With Wolves and the the screenplay for the film based on the novel.
